Pics, hell. I've seen the pics.
My problem resides in the moderation/editing/deletion of said offensive threads.
Changing a link letter and banning the user?
Maybe, given that Hanky is an extreme case.
Banned indefintely?
Give me a good goddamn reason.

There is none, other than personal dislike.
Same as PGF for goatsex.ce'ing PA&L.
No good reason.
Except this was in OTD. I fail to see any viable reason short of attempted drug dealing thru the board/server (DONE THE FUCK BEFORE) or other legal liabilities. being a reson for a ban.
For Geordi (unless there were private messages that i don't know about) the reason was fucking scanty.
"stop trolling" or however t was phrased, is not a sufficient warning.

Hanky posted some nasty chicken fucking. This is true.
Perma ban? Come on. Explain to me why, mod(s).
And give me a real debate, not a "he broke the rules" circular reasoning this time.

As i understand it, certain others (Spud being a primary example) have exceeded that limit.
When did it go into effect?

And Anno, all prejudices aside, you need to take a serious look at OTD moderation.
It is biased.

Spud has been banned once for posting an offensive image in the Pub. Ban duration 14 days.
He is on thin ice, certainly.

As for the scat picture - Hanky only quoted someone else who posted it. That same someone was caught last night for puppets - and low and behold - still posting away. That image is still there in the thread - I quoted it myself to point it out.

As for the chicken picture - how many other pictures of people doing unmentionable things to animals will I find if I do a search through OTD? More than the chicken one I can bet.

Whether you chose to believe it or not - moderation in OTD is biased. It's not what you know - its who you know.

PGF got permabanned for a goatse in Spi&Phil.

I fail to see, in either case, where an editing and lay down the law warning would not have sufficed.
See the newuser bit for my opinion on those who ignore a serious warning.

I just see so many ways around the problem, especially in OTD. The decision to ban reeks.
And, no offense to you, but the decision to permaban is ridding the site of one of its more entertaining and noticable members.

Unless we're under some type of electronic eugenics program, i don't quite get it.

I, personally, don't think that posting a picture of two naked hippies that are both consenting adults engaged in a private fetish that is--let's be honest--less offensive than some slaughterhouse work pictures, should be the last straw and the gateway to permabannaged. 

Admins, mods, I think that the popular response to this banning informs you of the general OTD community's opinion of this matter. 
True, you are here to keep us in check.  But, you also moderate the site as per the general consensus of what is "tasteful" or "tolerable."  Obviously, kiddie porn is disgusting. 

But a shitty pic of two relatively forgetable people with a chicken between them--there was no "chicken fuck" pic series--is going to get a user's account deleted? 

Come on, now.  We're all adults.  We're all over 18.  We're not advocating masturbating with the pelts of guinea pigs for the texture feel. 

I think this matter needs to be thought about in a dispassionate, clear way.

No PM was sent to Hanky. No warning was given. Nothing. I agree. An editing of the post would have sufficed. However that would have deprived certain people of the pleasure of banning Hanky I guess.

Exactly. There have been multitudes of shock pics posted - even as recently as this week - that have been vile - yet left alone. One which comes to mind is the guy who was skinned. There have been quite a few others as well. There was also a pic the other week of someone screwing a horse - also a woman giving a dog a blow job. Again - these were left alone. Where is the consistancy? If the moderation was always the same then it would be a different matter - yet the up and down manner of which OTD is moderated reeks of favouritism and lack of being impartial.

This seems to be the case.

Again, nobody (except of an occasional spammer, scammer or puppet) gets a permanent ban out of blue on their first offense.
There has to be a history of repeated rule breaking for this to happen. As it is the case with hanky in this case.
He is neither the first nor probably the last person who pushed it this far. Some people just don't seem to know when to stop. And as long this is the case, there will be poeple who will get permabanned and there will be poeple who are going to complain about it.

So why is it that he has 3 offenses in less than a week and is only banned today? His last post was 7 hours ago.

Some of the admin/mods seem to go on a witch hunt at times. And it's not only Hanky - or even users I like - I have seen users I don't like who have been treated more harshly than other users.

Sorry but moderation in OTD is inconsistant and I feel you either need to enforce the rules to EVERYONE or discipline moderators who don't.

And just to add to that - Admins have been informed before when a user does not feel a moderator is moderating properly or fairly and nothing ever happes. Whats the point in that?

what stops them is they don't wish to have any major disruptions. (such as we have seen today with hanky's banning)

But what they should consider is that if they ran "their" website in a less tyrannical way, there would be far fewer such disruptions.

perma-bans should be for legal reasons only. Regular/less-serious violations should have a 1-2 week ban cap on them.

that's like getting the death penalty for shitting on the sidewalk.

I normally try to stay out of these kinds of things, but I do think the banning was a bit of an over-reaction. Granted I don't know the whole story, there could be more to both sides, but from what I saw, it did seem like a bit of an overreaction.

Of all the offenses he could have committed, this is relatively minor, and even if it happened a number of times, he's a valuable member of the community...I would think no more than a few week ban would be logical.

Here's a thought: put it to a vote, see what the general consensus is. I for one would be willing to go along with whatever the majority votes for.

That system sucks. It should be and could be more like this..

With permanant bans given to those who deal drugs on the server, hack the server, or commit other serious violations meaning violations that could ammount to actual harm to the website or its members.

Wouldn't that be a much more enlightened sort of policy?

well here's the issue with that, gum_clinic/loki/paid/ganga, you_suck, Geordi
and many of the other people that post here will then be banned, half the
people I have banned were people that I like, I've actualy resisted banning
several that I dont like on may occasions just because of the drama that I
know will be started, "you didnt like XXX so you banned him".

I hold some people to a little higher standard than others, those that express
that they dont like me I expect certain behaviors out of, those that claim
to be my friend I expect better from, if they have any respect for me then
they would not put me in the position where I felt a ban was in order.

Hanky has always shown me respect and a great deal of consideration, you guys
dont have a clue how much it does bother me to ban him for something that I
dont see as being offensive, unfortunately other do see it as such and in light
of that fact, I'm obligated to handle it out of respect for those users.

It's such a fucking joke that he is banned indefinitely. As was stated earlier, permabans should be reserved for those who actually harm the site.

A permaban for something as petty as his actions were is absurd. There's absolutely no logic behind it.

I believe that we should all live in a society without rules and laws,
a self governing society, unfortunately some people are unable to govern
themselves and ruin it for other people.

the administrators, they set guidelines on disciplineary actions, the guidelines
aer simply being followed, the 'indefinate ban' is not necisarily permanent,
much of it depends on hanky and the rest will lay on our shoulders, how we
behave in this situation will have some bearing in the decision making, it
works the same way with rules, they dont start making rules unless someone
decide to do something thats quite disrespectful, threats are a prime example
if no one had ever made one, the rule wouldnt be in place.

There is a difference between indefinitely and a static 2 or 3 week ban for repeat offenders of moderate offenses. This is what the policy SHOULD be.

This seems to be the case.

Again, nobody (except of an occasional spammer, scammer or puppet) gets a permanent ban out of blue on their first offense.
There has to be a history of repeated rule breaking for this to happen. As it is the case with hanky in this case.
He is neither the first nor probably the last person who pushed it this far. Some people just don't seem to know when to stop. And as long this is the case, there will be poeple who will get permabanned and there will be poeple who are going to complain about it.

no offense taken but realize that those that dont like me or the job I'm doing are
almost all people that fear that they'll be banned, the same people that are
causing the problems or violating the rules I'm supposed to uphold, the remainder
of those that dont like me are the ones that are friends with the others.

simply put, if people follow the rules that are lax in enforcement, then there
is nothing to worry about and everyone can have fun including me.

If you ban some people for certain transgressions, and not others, then you would be no different than most of the American police. (This was a valid arugment presented earlier, and I didn't see a good response to this, although I would love to be proved wrong, so please do correct me if you did/do treat others with the same treatment you gave hanky).

well, maybe you should go through some of the thread, you'll learn that I view
respect as something earned, I do give people respect it's one of my top
priorities here and in real life, if I'm cutting up and offend someone, I
apologuise and make it a point not to do it again, there is no scape goating
going on, if someone is a little out of line it's easily overlooked, if some
one continues they are asked to stop, I've given hundreds of warnings and in
cases where they've been misinterpreted I've made it a point to clarify it
and do my best to make sure it is polite.

unfortunately it's not entirely valid, I am lax in the enforcement of most
rules in OTD, certain things are guaranteed to get an instant ban others
will get you a warning either in the forum in the form of a "stop that"
and other warnings go out as a PM, I try and maintain consistancy in
the actions I take, I could care less if some one is a friend or not, if
you are a friend and commit some of these violations than I view it
a little harsher than someone that is not, a friend would have the consideration
not to put me into the postition to have to take some action against them

try telling that to the trols that reside in OTD, some enjoy a wide range of
problem causing like posting personal info and photos of other in the forum,
posting shock pics that they know are a violation of the rules, ganging up
on the less popular members or those that they feel just dont belong there
some people see what I do as being heavy handed and when compared to the
absentee mods and those that are willing to let virtualy any thing go, I am
but there has to be a point in which shit needs to stop, if I'm not the one
that is stopping it, no one will be.
