Sometimes that seems correct to me. I've never for example realized any fact I didn't already know while tripping (like the capital of Botswana for example). I don't believe that's what Terence McKenna thought. I think he thought they helped to provide us access to some sort of planetary consciousness, or vegetable consciousness, or something weird at least. So that throws me for a loop because he is much more knowledgeable about hardcored psychedelic experiences than I am, I've never had ego loss, I've never done Ayuhuasca or DMT for example..

.
Ego loss is a state of mind....  A feeling of contentment under all circumstances, no fear at/of anything....    Not being offended, nor being bothered by "the little things"(such as words)....  Giving forgiveness as a humilitious act of understanding of people that have tried to offend you with those words - as words are only a weapon if used to point out truth of a lie of some sort....  Giving help to people when you can, just because you can - as you would hope someone would help you in a time of need....
.
If you have done shroomz~, perhaps you have had moments of a connectedness with the universe....?  A total feeling of happiness and "bliss" or contentment (I call it "clarity of thought") - as NO WORDS that anybody could say while you are in this state would ever offend you, as you might even laugh out loud at their attempts, or make a joke out of it....  That is what I understand as "ego loss" - a state I am enjoying to finally LIVE a life I knew of as an innocent child in curiousity of the world I live in....  And outside substance influences may just familiarize you with the feelings, but they are prolly~ not necessay to attain this state....  It is all a matter of choice and surrendering....
.
Smile and laugh at everything, don't worry about winning, having no expectations, and ego loss can be yours....
Play the game with purity and positive intentions at heart....
Learn, observe, be accepting of others, and peace, joy, & love will be yours as a result....!    :heartpump:
.
What makes you smile....?    What "moves" you.....?

Ok, 90% recycle rate was an exaggeration, I'm sure it's a smaller number.  If you want to see something scary though click the 'user list' buttton up at the top to see the complete list of everyone who's ever registered at the shroomery.  You may have to scan through a dozen pages worth of names before you see one you recognize.

Hey, it's very difficult to connect with others on levels that are meaningful, because we all value what is meaningful in such apparently different ways, that we hardly ever even know when we're on the same page.

If I didn't have my Lady in my life, and she didn't have me, I'd be going mad because she and I are the only people we know who has taken this whole personal growth and development (Enlightenment) trip seriously over the past 30 years. Even so, she has never 'witnessed' (to use the Christian term for the process) to anyone that behind all of her conscious life is the aspiration to become Enlightened, or whatever you prefer to call Union with Ultimate Reality. Maybe her spiritual identity is still growing in this social way.

The whole world around us is insane - cell-phone addicted (I won't own one despite its usefulness), while eating/smoking/yapping-about-nothing, while recklessly driving a huge piggish SUV. Multi-tasking is seen as a virtue when, from the perspective of mindfulness it is as far as one can get. No one in two decades has used the word 'transcend[ence]' and the metaphor of Life as a trip or a journey - which requires a map or someone Wise enough to give directions - is no longer used outside of aging hippies or 3rd generation wannabes.

The Psychedelic Experience IS meaningful and life-changing. I have stayed with the insights since my first LSD trip on July 1, 1972 and I have never been the same. This forum is still a kind of life-raft for young and old who find themselves adrift in a world best described in the Matrix movies. I've only known two Shroomerites, one remains friends with us but lives over a thousand miles away. The other rejected us because of his own weird paranoid trip, after two years of apparent friendship. As I said, it is very difficult to make real contact with people in life past a certain age, and yes, the existential isolation, the loneliness that results from the lack of Real depth is true suffering at times.

people coming and going is quite natural. thats just life. people will leave and people will come back.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Hey Markos, your post describes pretty well why I'm not feeling too good these days. Existential isolation...it seems like I've felt this for a good part of my life. Sometimes I wonder if there isn't something wrong with me; i don't have a cell phone, i usually don't talk about nothing, i definitely don't multi-task, i don't have a SUV...

I don't know what I'm trying to say, but it's kind of nice to hear someone else talk about this, it makes me feel not so lonely after all.

Thanks for sharing Markos. I identified with quite a lot of what you said. I've fallen so hard into this current period of isolation, two years and counting... and it's tough because, at least in my case, I feel the isolation making me hateful and bitter, which in turn makes it all the more difficult to reconnect with people smoothly. and when you try to socialize or be 'normal' again and it doesn't come out like it used to then it's just another memory to dwell on in bitterness when you get back into seclusion..and the stack of negative memories of contact with people grows larger, and the memories of when social interaction was happy and smooth grows fainter. total Gollum syndrome

1 - Running around hugging strangers and kissing babies is not exactly what I meant, think of it more as a state of mind....
-- You build relationships one person at a time, you have to get a feel for their nature/charactor before you go for a hug....
-- If I got pushed into the mud, and it was unavoidable, I would prolly~ sit there and laugh my ass off until they left (hopefully thinking I was crazy) - especially if the other people(s) were bigger than me....  Then I would go home and wash of my clothes, take a shower, and be thankful that I was not harmed....
-- If I was in physical harm's way, I would be very aware of opportunities to escape, and/or defend myself to the death....
.
.
2 - If I had already given the money, the money is gone either way....  I would make sure to point out to as MANY people possible of the scam....    Educating yourself about a charity BEFORE you give money is usually a key factor in understanding the charity, and how much you are going to give....
.
.
3 - That is why I suggested building relationships one person/stranger at a time, to get a feel for their nature/charactor before you act towards them in a more forward positive way of friendship....  You "don't throw pearls to the swine"....    But, judging ALL people for the acts of the fewer "bad seeds" in society based on past events is generalizing, and a weak reason for basing all of your future actions of kindness - in my humble opinion....
.
.
4 - I am not saying that your wrong, and I won't....  You have your reasons for your actions or thoughts - and is your choice as a person to think the way you choose to think....  All actions are based on choice, and on perceptions of events - perception of current events(as it should be, observing the "NOW", and acting on it), or perceptively re-living past events(lessons of experience, they should ONLY be for a possible outcome reference for "NOW" - but not necessarily)....  Living trapt in the past is just that, and is not living NOW....  It is your right of choice to judge all others in the future due to the actions of a few "bad experiences" in your past....    I believe that those kinds of things are just tests in life to see how you handle things in life, and how you get on with them - without effecting your happiness or well-being....
.
Getting "knocked down" is based on perspective/perception, usually having to do with the ego - or even fear of a damaged pride, which is also based on ego....    It is all in your mind, and a choice to react positively or negatively in your intentions....    Getting muddy for skipping around sounds a lot better than pushing an avalanche from underneath....  A muddied ego comes clean with a little water, IF you allow your ego to be effected that way....  Rolling around down a mountain under the chaotic power of an avalanche could get you hurt or dead if you further it's development to a higher potential....
.
If you surround yourself with "swine", you will only see "swine"....  If you surround yourself in "diamonds", and act like they are "diamonds" with positive intentions towards those that shine, you should in theory also get treated like a shining "diamond"....
.
For even in your blood family if your sister steals and lies to you, it doesn't mean that an unknown lost brother is going to act the same way as your sister....

Re: The Shroomery's Philosophical Community [Re: exclusive58]
    #4118218 -

Glad if it helps. Look, for the most part, young disenfranchised youth use psychedelics. They are already alienated from the mother-culture to begin with. Psychedelics take you further into alienation from the grand illusions of the culture, but they also allow you to more freely be yourself (especially if one is an introvert in an extroverted world).

I NEVER fit in and what made things even more difficult, I refused to fake it. Most adolescents would rather pretend to like the music, fashions, mentality, fads, etc. than show dislike and be shunned. I was shunned. I didn't like sports and didn't pretend to. Perhaps I had serious sexual repression problems, but beyond that I thought that the social-sexual games of junior and senior high school were shallow and stupid. Of course the sacrifice was a sacrifice of sexual experience, but some years down the road I took that sacrifice again voluntarily in order to grow spiritually. I will have to encounter sexual sacrifice again if I live to be elderly, so I can foresee purpose in the pain.

What am I saying? All this unwanted disengagement from the multitudes, this subsequent mastery over our desires to belong, to be of one fabric with much of society is going to turn out to be a blessing spiritually speaking. We are perhaps more [painfully] aware of the unconsciousness by which the multitudes automatically consume products and become addicted to them. Eventually, like the fourth stage of life in the Hindu model, it should theoretically be easier for many of us to further detach from this life, and prepare for death. The Tibetans say goodbye to loved ones in advance because they know enough not to have sobbing wives and children near them when they're trying to die properly. Emotions are like thunder, they say. Then they can lock [in lotus] and load, like they're about to take a big hit off of some DMT, close their eyes and orient them up through the crown of their head, and take off.

What kind of person treats death like some psychedelic trip? Us, that's who. This whole life is training for that moment. Death is the final alienation from this life, and we're always in training if you look at it this way. I once watched my ex-wife's girlfriend cry and mourn for a year when her husband got AIDS. When he died, she was oddly calm - she had already experienced the pain over a full year. It's sort of like that for us, the alienated. We don't have to act pious or where saffron robes like a wandering sannyasin [holy man], but if you look at it this way, that is a role that many of us unconsciously play. Maybe more people should become aware of this. Suffering must become meaningful, then we have alchemically turned Lead into Gold.

Peace.

I know the bitterness. I'm pissed that I don't have friends that I can phone or drop in on and be comfortable with. The world says "Grow Up" to me loud and clear - that's not how it is. They tell me I'm a freak, or worse, my own sister-in-law harbors neurotic fears that I should not be alone with her children! WTF?! I don't have to be married to a 'soccer-mom,' or go to baby birthday parties, or join the Indian Princesses or Little League with my kids. Those things are fine so long as they do not become the idolatrous center of one's life - making one's children the gods-of-one's life can only spoil [read,Ruin] children. They become monsters-of-the-ego and in adolescence, monsters-of-the ego-and-the-id! I'm a philosopher, not a parent. As Joseph Campbell the mythologist said once, "What does a philosopher want with children?" It sounds arrogant, but it's not - it's temperament.

So, my childless age-appropriate peers are burned out middle age individuals who are more interested in food than in f**king, martinis over marijuana (even though I don't use, MJ is far more interesting a substance); more interested in trips to other countries than trips to Infinity. In another country I'd still meditate and want to know what kind of spore prints are available, whereas my brother and sister-in-law - my example for materialistic, middle-aged, totally square establishment boors - went to Greece, to the temple at Delphi where the Pythian Oracle once delivered to Socrates the profundity: "KNOW THYSELF." I asked my brother-the-lawyer what he had learned at Delphi. He became angry, "What do you mean?! - We drank Ouzo, broke plates in a restaurant, threw-up the next day and went home." He is a lawyer, he makes a six-figure salary. 'What do you mean what did I learn?! I don't have to KNOW anything more,' is the response. He told me outright that he was not interested in Self-Knowledge. My brother (an accident of birth - we both incarnated through the same womb) represents the 'worldly mind' to me. Everyone I meet in the world is more like he is than like I am. We tend to LIKE people who are LIKE us. Nobody is like me, or my Lady. We are blessed to have each other as partners - another proof of the efficacy of prayer - because I for one would have gone completely mad by now without just one other human being to see reality LIKE I do.

To you, SHEIKofSHIITAKE, and crunchytoast and egghead1: the 'place' that I am coming from is a shared place - indeed, it is the SAME place. You may choose to interpret this as you wish - emotional or metaphysical - same feeling or same Being, but this is the same interpretation with the Words: "GOD is love."
This is the meaning of Communion. It is Holy.

Peace be with you all.
