Which is the better method for horse poo?

Agar's tek seems like a lot of extra steps compared to just moistening the manure near the proper content and baking in the oven for 2 hours.

What method do you people use for prepping your horse poo?

I just stuff the aged crap and/or straw into a cloth bag, pateurize in 165F water for an hour opn my stove. Hang it on my backyard fence to drain and cool overnight and spawn the following morning.

i agree. and so far i have been fine getting it to field capasity or a little over, then pasturize @ 170 for 2 -4 hrs.

I thought that stuff was supposed to be pre-pasteurized.

That's what I've heard but you better check with them to be sure. I've never used the stuff.

It comes pre-pasteurized and not pre. If you order the pre, you can spawn to it as soon as you open the bag.

I was just thinking to add just a bit more water than field capacity and squeezing the excess out with my hands or strainers or something.

Yup, ya sure can bake it in an oven.

However, you should use a baking bag to retain the moisture content inside the bag, or it will steam away & be sure to have an accurate oven thermometer inside the oven. As most oven dial gauges are OFF 25 (+/-) degree's one way or the other.

25 degee's on the cool side means it doesn't get pasturized & 25 degree's on the hot side means it is semi-sterilized. Either of which DEFEATS the purpose of PASTURIZATION.

Doing it in a pot of water, with a candy thermometer, you can control the temp 5 degee's either way - with ease.

I would rather have it right - than wrong.

My next question is: why don't you just pasteurize during the first step when you are breaking up the clumps? Why do you strain it and then add it to bags to be heat treated again?

What type of bag do you use? Would a laundry bag's holes be too large allowing the fibres to escape?

One question.. why is Agar so cool? You should probably read the TEK. Some say to use a laundry bag .. or you can use a pillowcase. I'd go and get a new pillowcase.. or wash one of your own.

Because the h/poo is in direct contact with the bottom of the pan being heated. Which (inpart) can cause it to get to hot (over 180F).

I strain it to remove most of the poo/tea & get the moisture content about perfect. That way, once the autoclave bag is done pasturizing, I can seal it tight with a rubber band & know it is good to go, once it cools to room temp.

The holes in a laundry bag are to BIG. Pillow case or something simular works a lot better. For small amounts, a doubled up womens NYLON STOCKING (or panty hose) works GREAT.

Go poke roadkill with a stick and ask him...

or simply take your pillow case, fill with dry poo, heat pot of water, place poo in pot adjust heat to 165ish keep at that temp an hour, Take bag out side hang from cloths line till cool. spawn take pillow case hang on line dry and place on pillow.

agar is cool because he has first hand knowledge about much of what happens here on the shroomery, and is always willing to lend a hand.

I have read the tek.

The pillow case is the obvious way to go, but i don't really feel like ruining one of the few pillow cases i own by filling it with 40kg worth of horse shit and poo juice. The response i made earlier was in reference to someone using a pillow case.
