Help!! My semi-fresh horse poo looks like it's got mold!!
    #1251246 - 01/26/03 09:13 PM (14 years, 29 days ago)

I had my horse poo in a garbage bag for a few days, I think this started some molding... I have had my poo in a bucket now so that the top surface can dry (then I can snag the dry off top and allow more to dry).

I was digging through this bucket and found that most of the poo has small little specks of white mold, or something that looks like mold. I was wondering if this poo is now no good, or if it'll be fine since I still got to pastuerize this poo... wouldn't pastuerization kill this mold?

Peace

Just paturize it & it will be fine.

Throw some in a turkey pan, insert meat thermometer & bake at 170 F (on the thermometer for 90 - 120 mintes. Stick lid on - tight & allow to cool to room temp. Then - hydrate with clean water & you are good to go.

PS, vent kitched with a big fan.

Ok... so let me see here, you pastuerize by putting it in an oven?  I've only read the pillow case method by roadkill...

I put my poo in a pillow case, with something heavy on top to fully submurge in the water, then I have a candy thermometer to check the temp to make sure it's around 165

If I were to do this oven method, what do you mean add "clean" water?  Just distilled water basically?

Thanks for replying, it's hard to get somebody to help you out sometime on this forum... I dunno, maybe I'm asking too much questions

I'm just trying to make sure I don't make any mistakes!

Look up firefang. See if that's what you got there. I'm thinking that's what it is. If so, it's a good thing to have.

edited for spelling. D'oh!

"CleanWater" = store bought spring water -- distilled or just pre/boiled & allowed to cool.

Heat is what kills contams (either wet or dry). It is easy to add water & tough & messy to drain it -- out. That is why I prefer the oven method. Because you do not have to drain it & adding water is easy. Add water until it just drips a tiny drop -- when you squeeze it hard. Then -- you are good to go.

Thanks for the help Vatoloco, I just pastuerized that poo with the traces of mold, and about to spawn... I'm sure it'll do just fine:)

My first smaller tuppeware of poo that I spawned 5 days ago is now fully colonized, that is the white mycelium has extended throughout the poo... but the mycelium for the most part doesn't seem like it's fluffed up white enough... I can still see traces of the poo color... it's like the mycelium has taken on a a white/pooish tint... maybe it's just not fully mature!

I really think that my poo tuppewares are too moist inside, because when I open them to peak there is some water droptlets on the surface of the mycelium and poo, plus there are water beads underneath the tuppeware lid! Should I take these out of my humid incubator and set in a warm dry area to help leach it of excess moisture? I really do think the poo is too wet, that's why it hasn't fluffed up really white yet!

What do you all think?

Peace
