Which method of pasteurization do you experts recommend?
    #2639026 - 05/04/04 11:52 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

To pasteurize poo and straw (not mixed) which would be a better method?

-Boiling in a pillowcase for 90 min.
or
-Using the oven-pasteurization tek?

oh..I Just remembered reading something a while back which said that one could also pasteurize poo/straw by placing it in an ice cooler and pouring a few pots of boiling water into there and letting sit for 90 min.  Anyone have a link to this method, or can shed some light on whether it works?

As always...Thanks alot guys your the best!!

The boiling method is good but I think a paint strainer bag from home depot works better than a pillow case for straw at least.(better drainage and easier to work with.)

---Use a thermometer(candy thermometer works well)and dont let the water get over 180deg! 170 is best but if you start pushing 200 you will have wasted your time and only succeeded in making a contamination magnet! Boiling water is 212deg and not a good thing when pasteurizing!!! Good Luck!

Thanks for the paint strainer tip! But im kinda leaning towards this boiling water in ice cooler method just because I have so much stuff to pasteurize. Would still like to get some feedback on whether or not this is a good method. Thanks.

Something similar: Pasteurizer and Composter
This can be modified to use an icechest and wallpaper steamer.

Hot water bath method.

Don't boil, that is too hot. Get a thermometer. Keep it about 160-170. A laundry mesh bag works very well also.

mrjim202000, you would have put it in a pillow case or something like that so it all stays in one spot. Thanks for that link to the icechest method...it seems alot more complicated than i expected so i guess ill just go with the oven pasteurization. Wish me luck!!

Isn't the thing in that pic called a 'croc-pot' ??

You put stuff in it to let it cook slowly.. like you cook meat for like 12 hours.... ? i dunno

A stock pot will do. Make a trivet from an old frying pan and drill out a bunch of holes. It's to keep the pillow case off the hot base.

As AtWar said, 160f to 170f (just have a thermometer in the drink), hold the pillow down with a brick. 45 mins later, take it out, put the next one in and top up the lost water with a kettle at the ready.

Make sure it's drained, then spawn it.

Same deal as manure, in this one 50/50 straw/manure.
