Does anyone know if this can be a verm. substitute
    #409502 - 09/30/01 06:56 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I got this stuff at Walmart called Schultz Soil-Conditioner. It seems to be similar to vermiculite but it is more stony and dense. However, they claim that it provides better airation, drainage, and moisture retention than vermiculite. I was wondering if anyone has used this or something similar for mushroom cultivation with results as good as those with vermiculite. Thanks for any help.

this isn't advanced

not for a verm seal in jars. it would allow to much space between each peice and contams would get in.

Well it seems to have most of the quality's that verm. has...from what you've stated. You don't have to worry about cont. as long as your clean in every aspect. Your chances will be much smaller if you practice this....
Think about it...you can take, birdseed, shit, straw, ect. and use it, once it's been p.cooked. AFOAF personaly use the bigger size piece's of verm. in everything he does. Only lost one casing in 4yr. I think he told me, and 0 jars :)
