Re: perlite instead of vermiculite

I have seen this question posed a number of times lately, with the
problems with getting vermiculite. Though, I have never tried this as
a direct vermiculite substitute, I have used perlite in with wheat spawn
to grow elm oyster mushrooms. It worked fine and in Stamets' Mushroom
Cultivator book, there is a mention of mixing perlite with sawdust and bran as
a substrate for wood loving edible mushrooms. So, sooner or later someone
has to try this as a filler in PF type jars and I certainly would not be surprised
to hear that it works fine.

No. Vermiculite absorbs water, perlite doesn`t.

Perlite does absorb water, but not as well as vermiculite. If you steep verm in water and then get it out, some of water will drain. In case of perlite, more water will drain resulting in more airy and less watery stuff.

Verm is just like a sponge, it will actively suck up and hold water. Perlite is basically a very porous silica rock. It will hold some water simply by capillary [sp?] action, but rather than ?locking in? moisture, it freely gives moisture up to the atmosphere.

I use peat : perlite for the majority of my casings. Peat is the water holding property in my mix, not the perlite. Perlite adds pore space to my casing, allowing better gas exchange. I have never used the PF tek, but I would follow their instuctions to the T. It works for them and many other people. As far as waterholding capacity, that is not it's purpose for me. For a little plant growing analogy, which a few people hear hate, when you add perlite or vermiculite to your soil, it is for PORE SPACE not water holding. Just as worm castings add SOIL TEXTURE, not nutrition.
