Perlite spawn
    #1521525 - 05/05/03 12:06 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Foaf mentioned "perlite spawn"  to my neighbor? The formula is said to be as follows.

Perlite 145 g, Wheat bran 165 g, Gypsum 20 g, Calcium carbonate 5 g, Water 67 cc., or multiples thereof.

Combine ingredients in a bowl, mix well -- spoon into quart jars -- apply lid filter material, or fill filter/patch type autoclave bags. PC @ 15 pounds 60 minutes. Inoculate with muti/spore syringe, or liquid culture. Incubate @ 78 to 84 F.

Said to store well & much longer than grain spawn. Anyone have any hands on experiance with this? And/or thoughts --  comments.

Sounds good! Take a look at this link:
http://www.krishiworld.com/html/mushroom.html

Quote:

(c)Perlite spawn
This was developed by Lemke (1971). Perlite is a mineral which expands at temperature more than 10000C. The ingredients, of the spawn are : Perlite (1,450 g), wheat-bran (1,650 g), gypsum (200 g), calcium carbonate (50 g), and water (665 cc). The gredients are mixed, filled in bottles and sterlized. Thereafter, the process is the same as for grain spawn. Perlite spawn is easy to disperse and can be produced at a cheaper cost. This spawn can be stored for a long time.

lol They grew mushrooms in 1971?

Hmmmmmm
Has some credibility behind it. My foaf is going to give this a whirl.

I've used perlite spawn before. It works, but I never really liked it, more for aesthetics I suppose. It just doesn't look like "food" that I would eat if I were a mushroom. Oh yeah, I used BRF a couple of times instead of the wheat bran. In the end though, I prefered grains. But some may prefer the perlite, who knows?

Also, a perlite based spawn is great for making spawn using peroxide methods. The perlite isn't organic, and therefore won't degrade the peroxide. Dry milk or other peroxide compatible supplements used. Those who have read the wayne manuals know what I'm talking about.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

6T, what about only perlite + LNS?

My LNS is like a liquid compost. I don't know how well it would work with perlite alone. I think I would add ground brown rice to the mix. Then try that, if you want to go with perlite as a spawn carring matter.

Mycofile, do you remember the quantities you used because this seems way too little water for dry ingredients (by about an order of magnitude).

Did Lemke perhaps actually say:
Perlite (1,450 g), wheat-bran (1,650 g), gypsum (200 g), calcium carbonate (50 g), and water (665 [cl - i.e. centilitres = 6.65 litres, rather than cc's=mililitres]). ?

I don't remember, I used the formula in GG&MM (grain chapter, near the end, "alternative spawns"), or was it TMC?

regardless, I'll have to look it up for you, unless you have the books, or someone else beats me to it.

BTW, don't be afraid to pester me if I forget!!!!!

from TMC page 54 .

" Perlite Spawn

120 ml. water
40 g. perlite
50 g. wheat bran
6 g. gypsum
1 g. calcium carbonate

Screen the perlite to remove the fine powder and particulates .Fill the container (small mouuth) with the dry ingredients and mix well .Add the water and continue mixing until the ingredients are throughly moistened .Sterilize for one hour at 15 psi. Inoculate from agar or liquid emulsion ."

Yeah, three times as much water as perlite, by weight, seems much more reasonable. Thanks a lot, guys, for being so helpful in response to my first post here.

(Actually, I ordered GG&MC & TMC yesterday, but going to have to wait for shipping...)

This mixture can be steamed rather than sterilized, just like a pf mixture.

Also, just fyi, like all spawns, the addition of peroxide will make grain to grain transfers much more foolproof.

Just adding that because I did it with this mixture as well as traditional grains. Search for details if you need them, but generally add enough 3% h2o2 to bring the Total concentration to .015% by weight (I think, like I said search for specifics!) post sterilization, pre innoculation with 10% colonized spawn.

Both things I have in mind since, even though I'm having much more success (first ounce-heavy fruit today - yay!) with spawning straw (with a peroxide-y Wayne-esque approach) than cakes, I don't have a working pressure cooker (bought one on eBay, but with a dodgy gasket) and fractional sterilisation, while effective, is taking up all my time!

Neither 18 grams (0.45x perlite) nor 120 grams (3x) seems to me like it would work. The former is too dry whereas the latter is a cup of mush. I mixed up three jars with the third one being a middle-ground of 65 grams. This middle one seems better, but could probably use less water, say 35-40 grams.
