gymnopilus liquiritiae

I am interested if anyone has any experience with g. liquiritiae. If you assume that I have liquiritiae, can I assume all gyms are free of cyclopeptide toxins and other nasties?

I've ID'ed them never ingested,
Wish I could be of assistance..
From my limited study on them
I would say not toxic... although
I am no expert..and don't suggest
you bioassay them..I know they are supposed
to contain the active compounds...that's about it..

Assuming can be dangerous. The majority of gymnopilus species are of unknown edibility. More than 70 species have been reported to exist in north america. Sometimes a microscope is required to separate the species.

eating just a bit of a shroom isnt a good way to test if its poison

you don't want to sample a mushroom you are not sure about.

you can taste a small piece, but then always have to spit it out.

and i don't believe i have ever seen pictures of G. liquiritae ever posted here at the shroomery.

anyways,
you don't want to play around with testing Gymnopilus mushrooms like that.

and also,
Gymnopilus mushrooms are difficult to identify without the monograph for Gymnopilus mushrooms in North America,
Of which i have
It describes hundreds of different Gymno's

other books don't go in depth enough
-they are much more complicated to identify than most hunting/ID guides show

Thanks for the advice and words of caution. I looked up the Hesler book on Amazon and it is on its way out of print. The 1969 version is on ABE books for 25 and 35 dollars--too much, at least for the present. Other mushroom books to buy first.
Bmarley or Greatone, if you have a second, I would be interested in what Hesler has to say about the macroscopic features of liquiritiae. It is smaller than other gyms listed in guides (2-5cm cap) and has a hollow stipe, and pretty fragile. Wonder if it has any gymno cousin lookalikes.
Apart from that, sometimes you don't know what the guides are really saying...A. edible because there are no known poisonings and other species in the genus are edible or B. poisonous because other mushrooms in the genus are poisonous, and there are no know cases of someone having eaten it.

the monograph does not note any look-a-likes.
it says G liquiritiae is a close relative to Cortinarius.

pileus: 4-6cm broad, convex to subexpanded, dry, grayish-brown, with reddish brown fibrils or scales, margin concolorous. Context white, odor and taste not distinctive.
Stipe: 6-8cm long, 6-10mm thick, white, cylindric or slightly compressed, central, slightly arachnoid-fibrillose, smooth, solid. Veil cortinate.

Thanks a lot GGreat for looking that up for me. Actually the mushroom that I have doesn't resember the Hesler description at all. The cap is deep orange-brown, and the gills yellow fading to brown on drying. The stipe is hollow and brownish toward the base, perhaps from falling spores. Stipe more similar in color to the gills at the top. The stalk slightly widens toward the base too. Dunno.

Last September, I started noticing an orangish mushroom which after a many sightings I came to identify as gymnopilus liquritiae. I had seen it millions of times in my guide, but it was situated by spectabilis, so I stupidly assumed that the proportions were the same. After finding it many times, I eventually made the connection.

This mushroom started to bug me. Psilocybin had been isolated in it, and it fruited like crazy in my own back yard.
