Gymnopilus liquiritiae?
    #23728658 - 10/11/16 03:40 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Found in Rhode island on decaying wood in a boggy area (though it probably wasn't consistently boggy, the moisture can likely be attributed to the recent onslaught of rainfall RI experienced).

Scent reminiscent of that of gym luteus (sort of like licorice) mixed with that of candy caps (kind of like maple syrup-curry). The odor was however mild.

White basal mycelium apparent on some.

I did not take a spore print because I didn't take any home.

Those found were approximately between 2 to
8 cm.

Some greenish bruising on old dried out specimens (see pictures).

This image shows the most green bruising:

I forgot to mention that though I did not obtain a spore print, there was a large deposit of spores on some of the stipes that was definitely rust-colored.

I found well over 100 of these in the are so it'd awesome if they were liquiritiae

Looks like liquirtae to me - not active in IMHO.  I have seen references stating otherwise but I don't recall any first-hand reports that they are – enjoy the hunt I'm glanc don't recall any first-hand reports that they are – enjoy the hunt

I had always assumed that they were one of the ones whose being active was kind of a gray-area, but I found green staining (see pictures for one example)  on several of these which were dried out and damaged, which made me think that they probably are active.

I don't know if that's green staining or just mold.

Here's a pic of some green staining Gymnopilus junonius, the staining is unmistakable.

I have collected Gyms before and not noticed any staining in the pins or where damaged, Gyms tend to stain in the pins (immature mushrooms at base of mature ones), but I noticed that keeping the specimens in the fridge in a paper bag for a day or so, or even just laying them out without a fan on them, made them stain green/blue.  Even if you're not comfortable with bringing mushrooms to your residence, then just collect a few, and carry them with you for a bit while still hunting, then open you bag and check for staining in about an hour.

Plus there's an odor that all Psilocybin mushrooms have, it makes my head feel woozy whenever I smell it, and my mouth salivate,it's like that smell tricks my brain into thinking it's about to trip.
