Gymnopilus liquiritiae
    #4791602 -

G. liquiritiae have started fruiting again and I post some photos for those interested in Gyms.
The caps are brown and yellowing toward the margin, the gills yellow. Hygrophanous. Cap size anywhere from 1.5 to about 8 cm. The caps often become misshapen as they mature. Stalks are often stumpy (2cm) but can be up to about 8 cm. They grow on well-rotted pines, so when you pull them out, you often find the stalk extends into the log 2 or three cm. Stalk is yellowish toward the cap, but darkens (and widens) toward the base. Stalk is hollow with longitudinal grooves in it. If gills are attached, then only slightly. Mushroom dries a cinnamon brown. The spores are an orange/brown and you can see clumps of them inthe gills. If you have the gym monograph, I would be interested if you could line up these with what you read.

I bio-assayed them last year (not my proudest moment). They had no immediate effect, but caused unpleasant effects for four months. (There are cases of "psilocybin poisonings" on the books which dragged on for 12 months.) Dunno. Good way to gain respect for mother nature.

No bluing. But not only does spectabilis not blue here, there has been no psilocybin isolated from spectabilis, and it still gets called big laughing mushroom.

Yeah, here in Northern California I had a strange encouter with Gymnopilus. I'm guessing I had picked 2 different species of Gymnopilus, one cluster was found in some wood chips and after being picked little spots of bluish-green bruising would appear. This patch was however infested with maggots, so I was understandably stoked when I found an entire decaying log of Gymnopilus, which I suspected and later had identified (by a mycologist, this event coincided the Oakland mushroom fair thing) as Gymnopilus spectabilis. The mushrooms which bruised were smaller and had different attributes than the spectabilis. By the way, the mycologist told me that I could not 'get high' from them, and decided to either subconsciously or consciously snatch my bluing specimens. I just left though, didn't want to argue with a mycologist. I hope the maggots colonized his entire table of show specimens. Some friends and I bio-assayed to see if the said mushrooms contained Psilocybin, psilocin or related alkaloids. No effects were noted after ingestion. With that said, I can conclude that at least the majority of Gymnopilus spectabilis cultures (of NorCal) do not contain active alkaloids. However, I do think some active Gymnopilus' are residents here in Northern California. If you find them, don't show them to any mycologists. I'll be back this year looking for that motherfucker, so he can do some ID'ing....

The gymnopilus spectabilus in Ohio are indeed pyschoactive, and a very very pleasant trip at that. I found a tree that grows them regularly and they didn't blue much ( it appeared to begin bluing on the flesh of the cap but you could barely tell because of the color ) they were more yellow then orange with a rust/orange print. Me and a friend ingest about 100 grams wet for a very good strong level 3 trip ( suallys last 6-8 hours as well, which is long for mushrooms).

However my problem with these is drying them. I find like 200 gram single mushrooms.....how the hell do you dry that. I tried het lamps on a few but it turned em black. So I wrapped them in a black shirt and tried it to no effect ( still black and rubbery ). I tried cutting them slightly so they could air out and I still couldn't get it to dry right.

I'll post pics of my findings on saturday ( I have tons, been dying to post for weeks no USB cable ).

Herbus, my advice is don't indiscriminately experiment with them unless you know exactly what you have--seems to me that spectabilis and aeruginosus are the only really safe bets.
Vandago, what is your preparation method?

Well unfortunatly we scarfed em wet. Those mushrooms are FOUL, so bitter, it's like crushing up aspirin in your mouth. But we would munch 100 grams wet ( usually a big cap or two and a couple stems, sometimes just half a cap). Me and 4 friends split a wet pound and all tripped very hard.

But today was a lucky lucky day for me.....1 POUND of pan subbs. Me and 4 friends are downing 50 grams wet a piece. Should be an exciting time. I get my USB cable before the night is over so I can finally post these outstanding shots.

Can you say more about the unpleasant effects?

Thanks GG for putting up that scan--I really, really don't think that the NA liquiritiae is the same as what I am finding. For a start (as your picture shows) there is an incurved margin, which is not present in the hundreds of specimens that I have seen. Also the whitened stalk that you see from MushroomExpert site photos is different. Even the immature specimens that I find are dark. As they mature, the top of the stalk becomes yellowish, as do the margins of the caps. Also in some of Richard Nadon's pictures you see discoloring or greening which is absolutely not present (nor bluing) in the ones that I find.

The cap texture appears different too.

ambros, wallace didn't say that, herbus did.
Vandago, get them on a fan. Make a screen box or something that is heavy enough to not blow away, face the fan up and place the box on top of it on high. It may be a characteristic that they dry rubbery.?.
Keep up the good work wallace. Very good thread. You have done a search here, right? Gumby has posted some good gym threads.
