What to do with agar?
    #4073645 - 04/19/05 05:39 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I recently got some malt agar but I have no idea what to do with it. I know you can grow cultures on it pretty easily, but what then? I also don't have any petri plates yet, so I was going to try filling some mason jars with the solution and using them as huge "plates". Even if I do grow jars of agar what then? Can you fruit from agar "cakes." Will wood eating species like oyster thrive on malt agar? What about rolling them in vermiculite?

Heh why the heck did you get it if you don't even know what it does?

It mostly used for isolating healthy myc from contamination or cloning.

Not noob stuff...really

Maybe because I wanted to try new stuff.. newb. Get some manners, or keep your ignorant mouth shut. Experimentation is the vital key to expanding techniques and knoweledge. Sticking only to what you know best is for the weak minded and timid.

Maybe if you read all of his other postings you would know herbanshaman is not a newb.... maybe you should know what you're talking about before you open your mouth..... and if you think you know it all why don't you offer help instead of putting people down for trying something new. I mean you once didn't know about agar so why don't you share the knowledge after all that's what this site is for asshole!

Damn Kronny, looks like this dude registered just to tell you off!
You should feel special!

HerbanShaman, typically you would either isolate healthy rhizo growth from a section of the agar to another fresh agar petri, or use a wedge of it to inoculate some sterilized substrate, usually a grain like wbs, rye, millet etc.  This results in very fast colonization of the grain compared to a multispore inoculation.  Also you can put a tissue sample cut from your best looking fruit on the agar in order to clone that shroom.  There's lotsa fun stuff you can do with agar.  I don't have any experience with oysters, so I honestly don't know what they grow well on.  I'm sure there's a recipe good for oysters.... GL bro :stoned:

Yes you are probably right.... and so ya'll know I didn't register just to tell people off..... and I'm sorry if I came off that way. (BTW I'm a girl, hence the MAMA in mamasharones), but once again you're not helping by being insulting.  Maybe you should include a link.  God forbid some one so something for some one else that they don't know.  I mean we can all work together instead of being stand offish.

Here is a link I think will help herbanshaman

hope you figure it out after all experimentation is the key to the advancement of new techniques.

Shaman

Also woodlovers like the agar.
You dont roll agar in verm, but you could use other jars to grow agar cultures in. I once grew in an empty jar of babyfood.

I made a liquid culture from it. With that you can inoculate grains or pf cakes. fast colonisation.
But hey, now I am back at the massive multi spore inoculation.

And I swear by that, fuck all the cloning and stuff.

Might give it a try, but IMHO it wont give you much. Unless you are a commercial grower wanting to increase yields to perfection all the time.

Im happy with the mushrooms from straight spores!

Give someone a fish, and they will eat for a day.. Teach them to fish, and they will eat for a lifetime..  I don't believe there is a stupid question, but I also believe that you should first search for the knowledge you seek, if you don't find it, fine. Feel free to ask, but asking without looking, isn't bettering yourself, it's being lazy..  Kronny didn't include a link, but he did say what Agar is normally used for, given enough information to lead on a great forum search.. So your his fiancee, and you register and made your first post a flame? Sure looks like you registered just to jump on your hubbies bandwagon.. Still.. It's just  :drama:

What????  How do you know what I look like?

And yes I am his fiancee and how you know that is beyond me.... or maybe I'm missing something.... But if it were you I would have said the same thing....

Yes I support the person I love.... and I support the people I feel are right.

I'm not trying to start drama but if you're going to make it a comfortable place to ask questions you can't come back and be mean... anyone heard of if you have nothing nice (constructive) to say then don't say anything at all?

I will defend anyone that's gettin jumped on even if herbanshaman is the one jumpin on some one else!
