Substrates... other than straw

It recently rained here where I live. My straw has been covered with water and I am afraid it will start to grow some mold. What other substrates would you suggest other than our beloved straw. Would straight STEER MANURE pasturized work as a substrate? It would probably colonize real slow correct? - C

as long as its not sitting at the bottom of a puddle then its ok. if so, why are you growing mushies where it would flood? or do you mean you have bails outside that might grow mold if you try to bring them insid eto use as substrate? just put a patch of starw and finch seed outside in a hole (dig one in the ground) where it will stay moist but not flooded. case it with vermiculate/peat moss for much better results.

im sorry i forgot to address steer manure. if you wanna use poop, get some good cowpies or horse manure and mixing it with straw helps. yeah it does colonize a lil slower and you gotta make sure it stays moist or it will harden and kill the mycellium. adding straw will help colonization time. put fully sun-dried straw/crap mixture in a pillowcase and boil it on the stove for an hour or two, mix it around too. then when that cools you can lay that out somewhere and with some good spores and warm weather youll be happy in no time. again i recommend casing.

Actually. Rain just got on my bails of hay. My bails are not sitting in water themselves but I am afaid that moisture inside the bails will cause them to start to grow mold. I want to just use Manure. Is that possible? If so.. how? - C ps i dont think ive seen a MANURE only substrate ever been used..
