Buddhism & Hinduism. To train, calm, or empty the mind, often by achieving an altered state, as by focusing on a single object.

mind can resonate with anything one can choose to follow the breath or anything.
one only achieves free will by choosing what they resonate with, by choosing what echoes in the mind.
until then it is all reflexes

Free will, is as only free as the person's notions of the consequences.

in concentration, a routine is practiced and the will that is so excercised fills the field of attention, while in contemplation, a train of thought is permitted to fill the field of attention. both may wobble, or wander.
a strong meditator brings it back without punishing him/her/self and resumes.
some cultures call both meditation, others are more selective. some subdivide meditation to concentration meditation and insight meditation - but they are interrelated, as insight does not really function until concentration (relaxation) has been established.
the thing about past life visions, etc. may actually fall under the general category of phenomena or Mara - delusion, or Shiddhi - magic, which is not sought but which may sideswipe the meditator and should be treated like mara.
siddhi is interpreted as an extension of joy in concentration meditation, and joy includes the following in cutures that discuss jhanas in concentration meditation: 1. shaking 2. heat 3. levitation 4. siddhi's - eg. far sight, telepathy, maifestations, telekinesis -moving objects etc.

Of course contemplation is beyond duality, it is not a limited state of consciousness.
Quote:
http://www.srichinmoy.org/spirituality/concentration_meditation_contemplation/
Contemplation means our conscious oneness with the infinite, eternal Absolute. In contemplation the Creator and the creation, the lover and the Beloved, the knower and the known become one. One moment we are the divine lover and God is the Supreme Beloved The next moment we change roles. In contemplation we become one with the Creator and see the whole universe inside us. At that time when we look at our own existence, we do not see a human being. We see something like a dynamo of light, peace and bliss.
Both Paramahansa Yogananda and Sri Chinmoy are good sources... I can recommend them with a clean conscious.
If you want to read something amazing check this chapter from Yogananda's autobiography. It's called the "Law of Miracles" it explains a lot interesting stuff...too interesting i might say...For the skeptics there is a lot of science involved so is not a matter of blind belief.

After we have finished meditating, how do we go about contemplating?
Contemplation comes after many years, when one is very advanced in the spiritual life. Contemplation is the highest rung of the inner ladder. Very, very few spiritual aspirants have the capacity to do even limited contemplation, and they certainly cannot do so at their sweet will.
Contemplation must be mastered before God-realisation, so it cannot be ignored or avoided. But, in your case, the necessity for contemplation has not come because your concentration and your meditation are not yet perfect. When your concentration is perfect and your meditation is perfect, at that time your contemplation will also have to be perfected. Then you will really be able to enter into the Highest.
