the question of humidity

I can?t buy perlite anywhere near. Could i just pour water into the terrarium instead to get humidity? Or is there some other way to get high humidity?
btw, how do i check the humidity-level?

Perlite is a must. Apparantly damp vermiculite can produce a fair level of humidity but the only way to get up into the high 90s is with perlite. Humidity levels are checked with a hygrometer.
