air exchange + retaining humidity
    #2014270 - 10/16/03 01:00 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Alright, so I'm going to build a poor man's pod. An air pump w/ air bubblers will ensure that the mushrooms have fresh air. Apparently holes are needed in the top in order to let some of the old air escape. My question then is this: with these holes in the top how is humidity retained when using perlite?

thank you

I have perlite and my setup is running just fine... in fact I opened up a third hole to let some more humidity out.

The holes should be made near the bottom. Filter your holes and you're set.

Oh yes of course!  You are absolutely right, thanks for proving me wrong.  You must be right since you're so smart in this field

lol which is it? Top or bottom? Also, would cotton balls make good filters for these holes?

CO2 is more dense than O2 so the two gasses would seperate, CO2 being on the bottom.

As far as I see it, if you have an air pump you want them at the top, if you don't you want them lower down to stop a layer of co2 collecting in the bottom. The air pump in the PMP keeps the air all mixed up so the co2 can escape through the top, if you put holes in the side with the PMP it is harder to maintain humidity. But then I could be wrong. The thing I love about growing mushhies is you learning something new with every grow. Its also very temping to go overboard, but I find over complexity often leads to mistakes.

What would you use to filter those holes? I've heard of HEPA filters, but I'm not sure how you would actually use that to filter two small holes.

Just a coffee kilter will do, mainly to keep out insects. When you fan / open the terrarium you let through 1000 times more microbes than would get in though the holes.

Filtered holes help keep in moisture while stale air can escape.
