Reishi - how to develop conks?
    #3944469 - 03/20/05 02:32 PM (19 years, 13 days ago)

I have this bag with Reishi going for two weeks now. It produces very nice antlers but so far there have not been any signs of conk formation.

Does any of you know how to trigger conk formation for an indoor grow of Reishi?

It seems like they have grown with low temperatures.... In what  conditions did you start primordia formation? You need temperature to be at let 20?C or plus (better if between 27-32?C). Humidity should be around 90% and 50-450 Lux if my mind does not forget... nice pics though

after searching and a better reading your problem should be ventilation... Ganoderma is highly sensitive to CO2 concentration...
see this link

and you will find what you want... you must be registered in www.mushworld.com

good readings

hope this can help you

For conchs you need very low co2 levels.

And a constant, steady mist. Your grow area will be soaked. Personally, I think the antlers are much better looking, and you're probably getting more material as well.

Probably not. According to Stamets, yields of the antler forms are about 1/4 what you can get if you allow full conk formation.

The easiest way to get conks is to keep the grow bag sealed, and perforate the sides of the plastic bag overlaying the colonized production block in a few places before any antlers have a chance to form within the sealed bag. Provide the proper conditions for fructification and you should get conks developing at the puncture sites. Keep CO2 nice and low...

Thank you all for your inputs. I will try if more air exchange will do the trick.

Pity I couldn't do what you proposed Basidio. There were already lots of pins when I opened the bag. I will definitely try this in a next grow.

What did you do to initiate fruiting? How long from inoculation to fruiting of your bulk substate? Thanks.

I inoculated hardwood sawdust with grain spawn. It took approximately 20 days to get complete colonization. 5 days later pins formed in the bag at a temperature of 18-20 degrees C. After a saw the pins, I just cut of the top of the filter bag and put it in the fruiting chamber with a temperature of 21 degrees C. and 90% relative humidity.

More fresh air is all you need, that and if you do another bag, just poke holes in it.

I don't understand what you mean by "another bag"?

Like, poke holes in the bag of colonized mycelium, then put a loose plastic bag/covering over this so antlers form, then conk formation will occur later?

I'm confused...people are getting conks from just letting the things sit out, and then I hear condensing fog is needed, now this.

Any help here?

Those pics in GGMM of the stacks of bags with single openings in that asian mushroom farm grow room all have conchs coming out...what am I missing here?

Thanks.

I just recently grew conchs, using the same strain that in the past gave me antlers.

The major difference between the two grows was the amount of light and heat, the antlers formed under low lighting and the conch had high. The high lighting also caused more heat which may have lowered the humidity, but the grow chamber had lots of condensation. Here are a couple pics:

Both were in pint mason jars and perlite grow chambers.

Nice pics.

I'm considering casing a reishi quart (spawned to wood) just to see what the hell will happen.  Still working on some lighting/heat arrangemements.

Keep us posted, eh?

Massive air exchange is the key if you want a conk to get spores. I just don't think that can happen in a tote of any kind. Build a mini greenhouse and keep the reishi on the top shelf. With or without a constant misting fog, you'll get conks that way.

I respectfully disagree with stamets that total yield is greater with conks. I've personally found that a large cluster of antlers weighs more than a single, or even double conk.

I have recently cased some reishi sawdust cakes in 50/50+ casing soil, same strain as the ones above. My set up is very simple: plastic cups-poting trays-2L pop bottles all set up on a widow sill to catch the morning light. I cased the cakes in October and here are some pics of the set up and what the fruits look like today:
