Going to grow Reishi, advice needed

I've ordered spores, and I've also ordered Stamets book. I already have The Mushroom Cultivator, and while it provides a wealth of info, I note that when it came to cubensis substrates, it can't hold a candle to the info found here at the shroomery.
I imagine that it will be the same with reishi, and the subs listed will be the ones commonly used in the commercial business. I know a general formula is beech chips with some bran or grass seed added. Are there others? Anyone experimented with various subs for growing reishi?
Also, what's the contam potential with reishi/wood chips?
Final question... for now Cubensis is generally considered easy, Reishi is considered moderately hard. Why is this? Less variation in temp/humidity or something else?

Oak is your best bet, and reishi's require darker enviroments. I'll look for some more info for ya!
Here is something to get you going....

Cubies are pretty easy to grow, but reishi mycelium is just tenacious. It's freakin' hardcore. I am having problems with my antlers stalling out.
WHY MUST THE ANTLERS STALL OUT INTO STUBS!!??
Is that temp? Humidity?

Lighting is not optimal, I'd guess. I don't understand the recommendations from GGMM in terms of how much light reishi needs for fruiting.
Humidity can definitely be upped, as can temp, I'm just wondering what the hell is better. I'm thinking it's temp, as I've had some odd jar-growth antler stubbies appearing lately. Dunno.
I'm working under sub-fucking-optimal conditions, dude.

Growing Reishi on sterilized hardwood sawdust/chips substrate and getting them to pin is not very difficult. The difficult part is getting them to form conks like GnuBobo said.
I have success with growing Reishi on sterilized beech sawdust (60%), beech chips (30%) and wheat bran (10%) wit a water content of 60%.

Thanks for the links, good bits of info like pieces of a puzzle
Regarding the difficulty of conk formation, I understand a lot of the medicinal value is found in the spores. Is this the main benefit of conk formation, would reishi that didn't form conks still have medicinal value?

Hey Rahz, check out this reishi grown by zeronio . Burying sawdust blocks outside is good way to get really nice looking reishi.

Ahh, yea I've been reading about that. I'd like to do something similar to this: REISHI
So, can this be done indoors? Enough air circulation, and possibly an air purifyer in the room?
Even though it's only sawdust, it would basically be an exposed layer of uncolonized substrate... scarey. But possible?

That's a lot of reishi. I don't know if that could be done indoors.
Looks possible and scary.

that is indoors.. just in an environment created specificially for growing mushrooms, not an extra bedroom..

Yes it's indoors, the shelter looks portable. I was wondering about this today, whether they move the shelter after a grow and set up in another spot for the next grow. Or do they use the same spot, with new logs.

Some great links there. I would love to grow some reishi someday. Question. If growing from spores, is it possible to do it with a spore syringe to inoculate either sterilised grains or woodchips? Or does one have to put the spores onto an agar plate and then use a wedge of that?

Hi zee_werp,
Question. If growing from spores, is it possible to do it with a spore syringe to inoculate either sterilised grains or woodchips?
I don't know. It might work with wood chips if you simmered them in potato broth with a little dextrose and yeast added, sort of like using cardboard instead of agar. I don't know if anyone has tried this yet. Are you thinking about trying this?
Or does one have to put the spores onto an agar plate and then use a wedge of that?
This is way or from a clone of a fruit body is the way most people do it.

Thanks for the tips.
OK so if one was to put spores onto an agar plate and then use a wedge of that for inoculation, what are the chances of it being a fruiting strain? Highly likely? Or is it a bit hit-and-miss?

Reishi spawn can be cultured by syringe inoculation via hardwood sawdust or whole grains. I've been finding some info here at The Shroomery and at Mycotopia.
My spores have arrived!!! I'm still awaiting the book I ordered. Although I could probably learn to grow reishi without the book, I'm hopeing it has a lot of useful info. Other than the stamets book and one or two others, there's not a lot of reading material out there on reishi cultivation. Ancient Chinese secret I guess.
