Plz help: Reishi myc growing through tyvek filter--how to fruit?
    #4752719 -

I don't have a little greenhouse enclosure yet, I'm hoping to put together a mini-greenhouse at some point, but now the reishi bags are growing through their tyvek filters (this is less than a week from spawning to pasteurized wood substrate with rye grain bags).

So, for a low-tek, dirt-poor adjustment--open up the bags and let the myc continue to grow toward the lower CO2 concentrations out of the bag?  Should I cover the bags' openings with a small sheet of perforated plastic and mist them?

God, sorry this is noobish, I just didn't expect this stuff to grow so quickly.  I don't want to fuck them up.

I'm growing these in 2 gallon ziplock bags, btw, with filter patches affixed with RTV silicone (poor choice of adhesive, but things are as they are :smirk: ).

    Thanks for any help.

Here's how the bags looked about 6 days ago after spawning:

Right after mixing them.

That's not myc--just water condensation on the inside of the bags.  But they look like that now with myc growth.

I saw Una's pictorial...just open the bags and mist them with no cover?

Thanks very much for any help.

I wouldn't open them. Position the filter so it's away from the substrate. Upon full colonization, cut a very small hole in the side of the bag. The reishi will fruit through that hole.

Thanks, RR.  I had to let a bit of myc piss out and then let some air into the bags so they're puffed up.  I'll let the myc mature more on the tops of the substrates in the bag environment and start giving them a little breathing hole in a week or two.

BTW--I'm considering using 2 liter pop bottles for containers as an ad-hoc subsitution for the bags pictured in the asian grow room in GGMM.  I'd cut the tops off to load them, then perhaps rubber cement or tape the top back on, cover the bottle opening with tyvek or polyfil, let the substrate colonize, then pull off the filter when they're ready to start fruiting.  Trying to mimic the contained substrate with a small opening that keeps moisture in and reduces contamination risk.

Ever tried this?

Thanks for all of your help.

Totally sealed up gallon ziploc bags work well too. You can open them once or twice during colonization in front of the flow hood for gas exchange, but otherwise leave them sealed up. A week after full colonization, cut a very small hole in the side of the bag and they'll fruit from there. Don't leave an air space in the top of the bag or they'll fruit there. Roll it up tight. You can see a time lapse movie of reishi fruiting that way at this link: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/868246.html Scroll to the bottom of the page for the time lapse reishi in a ziploc bag. Also, notice how the bag inflates and deflates as the reishi grows. I've never seen mycelium 'breathe' like that except reishi.

I was concerned about contams...but I'm guessing reishi myc is relatively resilient after colonization of a pasteurized substrate.  I just had my substrate a bit too moist so I had to toss some moisture off.

Good call, tho.   Gallon ziplocs are far cheaper than buying bottles of soda.

I might bother you for some other help in the future, tho.

BTW--I'm confused, now.

Stamets says that you can get conks--and some of the mushroom farms in asia do so with little cleanliness and no condensing fog.  So, if you use a bag environment like in that video (quite cool, btw.  ), and a small opening, what am I missing for conk formation?

It seems like I should be able to get conks and collect spores (God...I don't know how I'd get a clean sample of spores from a polyspore like that ) from a gallon ziploc.

Any advice?  Like a rubbermaid hooked up to an ultrasonic for sporulating reishi?

Thanks very much.  You're a living encyclopedia.
