Ganoderma lucidum aka The Reishi project
    #958940 -

I got some culture of G. lucidum in mail not to long ago so I decide it was time to start a project.

- On Oct. 12 '02 I spawned one quart jar of alder chip and one quart jar of mllet. When fully colonised they will be spawning sterilized bags of alder.

I will keep you guys updated on how the project goes. Pictures will come when substancial growth appears.......................peace

Sounds great. I love watching the weird things this mycelium can do. Are you going to try for antlers or the more traditional conch-like shape?

Interested to hear reports of your progress.
I'm growing them on a sawdust/bran substrate,in quart jars.I let them colonize the jars (with filter disks in lids) for about a month, then placed the jars in my growing room and removed the lids entirely. They've been fruiting for a week or 2 now.
A few days ago,I started noticing sort of mustard-colored patches on them, which seem to be turning into more lacquered looking areas. My temps are pretty low,unfortunately:60-70.The biggest growths are about 1/2 the size of my finger, but not antler shaped.

As you may have guessed,I have no digital camera...

Bowlin-name - i belive i will try for the traditional conch shape, but you never know i might get antlers instead. We wiil see when the time comes

Arural - I hear they can take a long time to fruit.

Thanks for that cool thread. Nice outdoor pics. I just noticed first sings of growth two days after spawning the quart jars. It is light and fuzzy. How fast does reishi colonize?.............peace

The beginning is slow like in other woodlovers I've seen. I guess this is because the mycellium has to adapt to different substrate (from grain to wood). After that it grows very quickly - but I didn't take exact notes. I guess if the temps are right your jars should be colonized in 2 weeks.

Sweet. Well since im doing both grain and wood i guess i will see what takes faster. ............peace

Did ya get those from Ralph?
I use an Eberbach to make plates into syringes. Then use PF substrate jars as usual. The Reishi colonize the 1/2 pints in a week. If left for long, they will turn into a hard brick of mycelium. Dont let them go too long.
I then macerate the "jars" and use to spawn a woody sub, such as aspen or alder chips. These colonize according to the bulk- pretty quick, IMO.
The fruiting can take a while...but it is worth it. I have even done them "in-vitro", in mycobags.
Hope this is useful..

Thanks for the info. Aslo no i did not ger the culture from Ralph. I got it from Zeronio. thanks buddy..... So the PF jars actually work for colonizing....crazy. Well maybe i will have to try that one some time in the future............peace

Well my jar of colonized millet is going alot faster than the wood chip, But that might be due to the jar with the wood chip is a little too moist. I try doing a ager plate but i got contamd so tonight i will be doing up some antibacterial agar, and then everything sould be fine................peace

Well the Reishi first plate that was contamed had a serious case of bacteria.  The bacteria took over alot of the uncolonized agar medium.  I didn't throw it away because i noticed from what it looks like, the mycelium decided to take over the bacteria and fight it off.  There is still bacteria on the plate, but if the mycelium keeps on moving outward it does not look like the bacteria has a chance
Has anyone experienced this also?..............peace

I would prepare more plates and try to transfer healthy parts of mycellium. This is the standard procedure - as soon as you notice contaminants transfer myc away.

I had already done a transfer and it is showing no sings of contams. I was just interested in the contamed plate due to it fighting off the big colonies of bacteria.............peace

PS Zeronio have you recieved my print?

I see what you mean. Some species are so agressive that can take over bacteria and molds. That's a good sign that mycellia produces some sort of antibiotics. I noticed it with Ganoderma lucidum, Fomitopsis pinnicola & Trametes versicolor, but I always throw away such plates and jars, because bacteria may survive and can cause problems later.

PS. Yes I got it. Thanx!
