ganoderma lucidum
    #1461640 - 04/15/03 09:40 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

So I tried to get some Ganoderma lucidum fruiting for the display last week, but strangely both bags of two diferent isolates contaminated early. I removed them from the others and put them in an humidity tent. They grew antlers, but got more and more contaminated so I sort of chucked them in a box outside. Well they kept on going and formed spore surfaces. I decided to bury the sawdust block in my landscape to see if the fruiting will continue.

I think the spore surface formed that way becuase they were forming at some random angle due to me chucking them into the box. They are pretty.

The contamination looks like some aspergillus, trich, and some kind of black shit.

I hope they fruit some more....

They don't seem to mind that contamn very much - it's probably contaminated only on surface.
Did you use supplements or just straight sawdust?

Yeah it seems like the contam is just on the surface. It is nowhere near the sporocarps. The fruits looks like little eye stalks. Hopefully they'll keep growing now that they are outside.....I am glad I checked on them one more time before they became compost.

Oh yeah, supplemented sawdust, about 25-30 percent oatmeal by weight which is high, but I wanted to insure fast growth and fast fruits. It worked great for the oysters, but not so well for these guys. Oddly enough the G. lucidum were the only bags to contam which is I think is strange simply due to the fact that the mycelium covering the sawdust is usually so substancial.

Once the blocks are covered with mycellium they hardly contaminate. The contamns probably came later.

Cool, I was hoping that was the case. It makes sense. I removed it from the chamber though, because I did not want it spreading to the others. viva la ganoderma!
