Cultivating Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) on Douglas Fir

Hi, I know other varieties of Ganoderma grow quite well on Fir's, but I was wondering if anyone has cultivated the Reishi on Fir sawdust? I am planning to use Wood pellet fuel, but cannot find any hardwood varieties in these parts. My question is not so much if the Reishi will grow, but how well it will do on Fir as apposed to hardwood, anyone know?

Fir is a hardwood, even if it isn't as hard as birch or oak. It grows naturally on fir. You'll do fine. I've grown ganoderma tsugai and lucidum on even pine sawdust. It isn't picky at all.

Fir isn't a hardwood. I am pretty sure it will do OK on fir, but you won't get as good of a yield as on a hardwood.

Not to nitpic, but douglas fir is indeed a hardwood. I live in the middle of a forest full of it. It is even used as a hardwood floor material sometimes, and there is an 'aircraft grade' of douglas fir that is highly sought after by aircraft builders for wing construction. It also grows all sorts of polypore mushrooms very well, which is exactly what reishi is. Here's a of a picture of a close relative of the ganoderma species growing on Douglas Fir. You can barely see me down in the brush pointing up. The polypores near my hand are ten to twelve inches in diameter, but look up near the top of the picture. That polypore is easily three feet across. Compare it to the size of my hand and cowboy hat.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I just found a source for some hardwood fuel pellets (non-evergreen). My concerns were regarding the effect of the resins on productivity. Since Reishi's close relatives do very well growing on Fir's in the wild, then it must do well also. The issue was that I am growing another Fungi that only like non evergreen hardwoods.

I see. I'm sure your reishi will do well on douglas fir. I've used it many times for ganoderma tsugai and ganoderma lucidum. Douglas fir is a coniferous hardwood, but also doesn't have the toxins(to fungi) that pines have. It's nowhere near as hard as birch, oak or ash, but wood decomposers seem to love it.

What?s the latin name of douglas fir? I would like to find it in my country but don?t know its spanish name. Thanks.
