Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi Mushroom) preparation
    #4144561 - 05/07/05 01:30 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Anybody know how to make Reishi tea taste ok? I have access to reishi mushrooms fairly cheap and I was amazed at their beauty later to find out that this mushroom is one of the most powerful medicinal fungi known in Chinese medicine. So I tried making tea by heating and slowly boiling pieces for 2 hours. I decided to add honey and make it taste better, but it still nasty. I searched the net but no answers. I guess that's the tradeoff of consuming this fruit of the Gods. Also while in the subject, I want to make some kind of spore print and try to cultivate this mushroom in the future, although I heard it is difficult, but I would like to find somebody who has already done this. again, I need tips on making good tasting reishi tea.. thank u!!

as with all medicines they dont taste good.
We steap them for an hour and then add honey and orange juice. Then just gulp it down.

You can dry them, grind them and pack powder into capsules too.

Cooking the Reishi releases some potentially medically valuable molecules form what would otherwise be indigestible chitin.

Basically, you have to do a hot water extraction to activate it.

Is there a point at which boiling chunked or chopped reishi becomes TOO LONG?
I was afraid if I boiled it very long I might destroy the medicine, not release it.

There's also a saying, if you need the medicine it won't taste bad. Try diluting it a bit until you get used to it. If it always tastes terrible to you, it might not be good to drink it.
Reishi is one of the best sources for Beta Glucans. These are complex carbohydrates with protein side linkages and they have incredible effects on the body. The whole story isn't in yet. But basically, the chemistry isn't heat labile, so you can boil to your hearts content (but that makes your tea stronger, and magnifies any minerals from your local water. Best to use very low mineral water for these teas. Grinding up the fruit body makes it last longer. I use generally about a loose palm full for each cup of finished tea. (about a quarter cup of dry ground fruit body).

Mrs Rabbit boils the broth a bit weaker than you would for tea, then uses it for the water content in everything she cooks, such as pasta and rice. This way, we eat reishi and other polypores with every meal, every day, and there's no taste.

Thanks again.

I am in possession of 3 nice conks ( 8 inches) and a couple smaller chunks, and have just now seen the benefits of the tea.

That's a good way to do it, but the effects are much more profound drinking it straight up I would imagine.
I find that a glass of reishi tea energizes me more than two bags of green tea, But in a Different way, A BETTER WAY!

As a a tea or boiled water concoction for cooking, how long could one expect this to last in refrigerator once prepared?

I asked mrs rabbit and she said she keeps the broth in the refrigerator for up to a week, and for longer storage times, she freezes it in one quart(liter) containers.

Something I do with my vegetable stock is, I freeze it in ice trays so I can pull a cube out individualy for use. This would be a good thing for mushroom tea as well.
