Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi)-GGMM question
    #4494364 -

Hi

In GGMM everything is clear for me but don?t understand what Stamets does once the bag is fully colonized. Does he opens the bag or not? From what I understand he just gives some light to induce pinning but with the bag closed to sort of promote stem enlongation (high CO2), then once the stems grow to the desired lenght, air is introduced for cap development. Is this right or not? You know, english is not my mother language and once in a while I have some problems understanding things.

Thanks.

When the bag is fully colonized, cut out a small, round hole 1/2" in diameter. The reishi will fruit through that hole. You can see a time-lapse video of ganoderma fruiting that way from a zip-loc bag here:

Thanks for the answer and the link, but how did the guy sterilize the chips/sawdust inside a ziplock bag without melting it inside the pressure cooker?

The chips and sawdust were sterilized in quart mason jars, then transferred to the ziploc bags during inoculation for fruiting. One could just as easily use mycobags, but ziplocs are cheaper.

Then ziplock bags are supposed to be sterile, right?
Another question, why didn?t he fruit straight from the jar?

Thanks again.

Ziploc bags are 'clean' if not sterile. Once the grain spawn has colonized, sterility is not as important anyway. A gallon ziploc bag holds more wood chips/sawdust/coir than a quart jar, thus bigger fruits.

I love the page in your link Roger! Your time lapse movies are so wonderful! The video of the reishi fruiting over time captures the beauty of the mushrooms morphing colors in a way that's hard to see by just watching them grow! Great page! Do you have any info on creating nice outdoor patches? I isolated a local strain that I found growing outside my lab here, and it was fruiting in 90+ degrees! I'd like to create a nice outdoor bed by making some sawdust spawn, and inoculating a bed of enriched hardwood chips substrate.
My questions mainly focus on how to pretreat the bulk substrate that will be inoculated and used to create the bed. I've seen posts of someone boiling the substrate for some amount time ( I can't recall how long right now). Do you know if this would be a viable treatment for an out door bed? Anyone have experience or tips for outdoor reishi patches?

No treatment is necessary for an outdoor bed. Sterilize wood chips and inoculate with grain spawn. Once the wood chips are colonized, bury them in a much larger pile of damp wood chips outdoors, or as an alternative, you can inoculate dowels with your grain spawn, and when they're colonized simply drill holes into birch or oak logs and drive the dowels in with a hammer. It helps to bury the logs to keep moisture in.
