The answer to wbs soaking time.

This is a 5 gallon bucket of 50% wbs / 45% rye / 5% rape seed (just my personal seed mix preferance - as it will fruit well alone (cased)- or make premium spawn into bulk).
It was filled 2/3rds full of dry seed & enough water to cover content, left to soak overnight @ room temp.
12 hours into soak, was checked & seed had expanded above water. More water was added, to cover seed & content stirred.
This afternoon was checked again. Seed had expanded to fill bucket. Meaning expansion factor of about 33.3%
A few differing seeds were picked out - to see if they would crush (easy) between thumb & forefinger nail. They all did.
(note crushed rye grain on stir spoon)
Meaning - seed / grain is fully hydrated. IMHO - NO SIMMER IS NEEDED or REQUIRED. Simmering will only draw out starch's & make seed / grain sticky.
Next step - rinse in collander, drain until no drips & jar up.
Thumb & forefinger nail cleaving test is simple - easy & about foolproof. No set soak time limit. Just soak until seed/grain will split in half from fingernail pressure.

Rye does not need to be simmered. Will have to try this.Simmering does bring out the starch but a very good rinse takes care of that.

Or a pinch of gypsum in your soak water.

Do you also feel that straight WBS doesn't make good case substrate, but is suitable mainly as spawn?
I have some WBS colonizing and was curious if it'd be a mistake to just case or if i should jump to straw.
And thanks for the tek, I'll use this method in my next grain mix.

I've been wondering the same thing.
-------------------- And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk ...four times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and its not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire.

I have found this to be the case. 70%rye,20%WBS (rye soaked and simmered, WBS just soaked) mixed with 10% dry verm when straining (so you dont have to strain as long and gives you a little beter buffer if you put to much water in often because your impatient) fruited rather well for me. Just as good or better then straight rye (cheaper too), especially in later flushes (verm helps to rehydrate it more, grains dont rehydrate well themselves in a dunk). I didnt try with less WBS because I always had wonderful luck with straight rye. These days I just soak WBS for 12-24 hours, then simmer for about 10 minutes to heat it up so it steams all the water off (I dont rinse it) when you strain it. Mix with a little dry verm to soak off some excess moisture..then that stuff gets spawned to bulk.
I'm crazy silly though..

WBS alone (used as sub) will fruit out. But, IMHO... not all that well, or worth doing - if you are looking for potent --> weight.
Just screwing around - when I didnt have enough of both to do what I wanted & mixed the 2, I found about about a 50/50 rye/wbs combo will fruit out as a sub - as well as rye alone, with both weight & -----> potency. The rape seed adds some essential oils, that IMHO give a seed/grain sub - that much more kick.
The nitty gritty reality is.... for POTENTCY & MASSIVE WEIGHT - nothing can beat spawning a seed/grain to good compost & second to that is weathered pasturized horse poo sub, cased.
The 7 shrooms below averaged about 100 wet grams each, with stiff solid stems. That is what a good compost, or H/poo about 3 inches deep, cased & well watered - will get you - if done right.

"RAPE", as in canola......... about $18 per 50lb bag - ordered from any feed & seed store.
Rapeseed is a very tiny seed, about pin head size & loaded with oils. So much oil, you do not want to use over 10%. Otherwise, you will have problems.

I don't know. I've been fruiting straight WBS for a couple years now and get really great flushes and good potency.
BUT like you just said, "nothing can beat spawning a seed/grain to good compost & second to that is weathered pasturized horse poo sub, cased."
I couldn't agree more.
On subject of soaking WBS, well, its never worked that great for me. I always simmer for 35-40 min and strain n drain well. This has worked great for me.
Just my 2cents

You know, it's a funny thing. What works for some - doesnt for others.
Best is to go with what works for YOU. And, if it takes spawning bulk poo .......NUDE, dancing around a bonfire on a beach, under a FULL MOON.........doing JD shots ..... I SAY.............GO FOR IT.
Cause whatever works...........does.
Burning Man...... is sorta like that. Funniest shit - I ever saw.

So if I wanted to try to get a few straight WBS casings going, any sort of tips for success?
