bogus spores?

i had posted a little earlier.. the gist of it was that out of my dozen jars this time, only 7 colonized, while they all recieved the same amount of spore solution, in the same exact process, same environment..etc... essentially, exactly the same thing happened to all the jars... a poster on the forum suggested that i wait another five or so days and see if anything happened, open one and check for odor, etc... when i checked, the one i opened smelled exactly as it should, a moist mixture of vermiculite and organic brown rice flour... and no signs whatsoever of any mushroom life.. so contamination is most likely not an issue... has anyone else ever gotten a bogus spore syringe? i ordered directly from fanaticus (m. romero).

If seven of the jars colonized then obviosly the syringe wasn't just water. Maybe your jars wern't cool enough when you innoculated, or the syringe got hot during shipping, or sat in the sun for too long.

It is possible that if you didnt shake the syringe between jars that the spores floated down to the bottom of the syringe and by the time you had innoculated the five jars that colonized all the spores were gone leaving the seven jars that didnt colonize with just water and no spores. This is rare but it happens, did you shake inbetween innoculations?

hm, that could have been the case (i shook the syringes before the innoculation procedure, but only once, before the first jar) - also, there were two syringes, and it might be possible that the spores from one may have been killed in shipping (it was a very hot day when they arrived, and they probably sat in the mailbox until late afternoon) - oh well, live and learn, right....

at least i still have 7 healthy jars ;^)

I believe at PF that if your syringe is damaged or contaminated then they will send you a replacement. im' not too sure but find his e'mail and get in touch with him. peace
