Are humidity domes essential when rooting salvia?

I'm looking into receiving some salvia cuttings in the near future. When im rooting the cuttings is it essential for a humidity dome to be used? If so, how do you get it acclimatised to your normal humidity?

If the salvia has come from a supplier with a similar climate to you, the the plants will more than likely already be acclimatised.

If you do have a problem, then thay can be acclimatised by placing a clear platic bag over then as they root, and slowly tearing holes in the top of the bag over time to slowly reduce the humidity.

Untill they root they need a high humidity but also much air exchange.
Once they are rooted(10-20 days) then you should gradually reduce the humidity to ambient(over a longer period, a week or 2)

hey anno, i have a salvia cutting that has been rooting for 5 days with a freezer bag over her for humidity.. she is in my window... i was wondering what i should do for air exchange and when i should start to put a few holes in the baggie? i thought about air exchange myself and put 2 little holes in the baggie yesterday but her leaves went limp soon after...so i put another bag on her and shes lookn better.. i know shes rooting cause a few roots popped out at about soil level from her stem.. all help appreciated....thanks....

hio strang,

i experienced that its fine for my salvia cuttings when i put a plastic bag over them like you. once a day i took it off and gave em some sprayed water. after a few weeks i put the bag off and now they are all very nice little plants and have no problems with my climate. i think that an established root system is most important for the new cuttings, and as long as its not complete you should raise humidity as high as possible.

i dunno if it works for you, but it worked well for me.
