Someone needs to:

1 Download every single Grateful Dead show in .shn format from archive.org via FTP.

2 Extract, then convert the .shn's directly to 160kb/s mp3's.

.....
5 Then offer to do the motherload of B&P's by cloning the entire disk.
Result: A Grateful Dead music library at your fingertips!!
volunteers?

Converting SHNs or FLACs to MP3 and then distributing them is baaaaad. A major faux-pas in the world of digital music trading. The reason SHNs and FLACs are used is because it compresses the audio but doesn't shortchange the sound the way MP3 does. It's fine enough to convert your own shows so you can put them on you mp3 player or burn them to mp3 CDs for your use... but putting them into cicrulation.... that's a no-no.

shortchange the sound? ...

sampling shows that are already inferior in quality at 160000 times per second does not shortchange the sound...

only robots can tell the difference. also, there are VBR mp3's at audioarchive as it is....*shudders*

besides, do you think people that love the dead that are not technically saavy really care?

Whats worse is, people downloading the shows then distributing truly low quality mp3's (96-128 kb/s) with innaccurate meta information (or none at all).

There is software available that sets permissions on files that prevent duplication, sharing, and editing... essentially 'read-only' files.

any suggestions?

yes, you can tell the difference, maybe not every time, but it all comes down to 'knowing' the difference... Especialy when burned to cd.

the vbr mp3's are great, for personal use, sampling, and ease of download... but for the people who want to create a library of complete, high quality shows, you want to start with the best source possible...

agreed, but the best possible source takes up way too much room and the difference is not that great.

and what about people that don't have high speed internet?
download a show at 56k every 7 days which may or may not be a good show in the first place?!

lets not spread good music because were anal retentive about quality?
that's missing the whole point of the music in the first place imho.

im doing it anyway because I don't have a life... wanna fight about it?

they have b+p action at etree. all shn. with todays technology, and a lot of people having dvd burners, it's going to make the b+p deals much better with spreading high quality shows.

the only problem i have with mp3's is the misnaming, and mislableing of the files... that's what is great about the shn's... it's like the people said "were keeping right because we know better"... with mp3's, you get them thrown all over the place, people will start to trade partial shows, say user X has the complete show, and shares it via p2p.... user Y see's this, and is like "wow, cool, but i want only half the songs there" so when user Z checks out user Y's files, he's like "wow, cool, but where's the rest?"

that's whats great about shn, is that mainly the people that are ready for the responcibility to maintain the origionality and completeness of shows use it, and it makes them more a trustworth a source... not everyone has the time to check and research every show, it's just too much. ANd it REALLY sucks trying to fill in the gaps to that 1 show that you just cant get ouf of your head.
