wait to birth?
    #388894 -

i have 6 BRF/Verm jars made PF stylee currently colonising in my cupboard. the spores were Ps. cubensis 'Ecuador'. I am just wondering how long i should wait before birthing the cakes after they have reached 100% colonisation?

PF says wait until a good deal of pinning has occurred, but that's with the PF strain. the PF website says
that Ecuador is 'not a very good invitro primordiator' so should i just birth the cakes as soon as they are at 100%?

also, i'll be growing golden teacher next, so should i wait for invitro pinning with them or not?

cheers,
japh.

the cakes are raised in a jar because the microenvironment is ideal for colonization and conducive to pinset upon exposure to light. some species and varieties require a significant lowering of the level of CO2. this can be accomplished by birthing, but can also be done with use of a micro-filter lid, or by teks like loosening the lid and inverting the jar without compromising the contam-reduced, humid microclimate.

give them a chance to sleep-in for a few weeks before trying to force them into action.

sometimes a cake will also be fully colonized on the surface but not to the core of the cake. cubie rizomorphs love to run along the surface of the glass, but may not be so quick to ram-rod through CO2 laden substrate.
