Re: GD or Floyd ??? [Re: TYL3R]

It's a good question.

To me, Floyd is the better band

1) Floyd was more psychedelic. The Dead have their drum/space thing but early Floyd was trippy head to toe. For me that's preferable. The Dead never took rock'n'roll to the extremes like Ummagumma did. And have you ever seen video footage of Floyd live back in the Syd Barret days? They were just taking it so far musically. Just total freak-out madness.

2) Album for Album, Floyd wins. I may be over looking some important Dead records but as far as studio albums the ones that really appeal to me are Working Man's Dead, American Beauty and although the critics are mixed on it I love Terrapin Station.A lot of people consider the Dead a mostly live phenomenon but to me (and I saw them live) the most important thing about the Dead is their studio work. They have a lot of strong songs, great melodies. That's the most important thing they contributed to rock'n'roll--- great songs. But like I said Floyd's studio work early stuff, Syd Barret era--beyond cool super weird, fun psychedelic totally LSD inspired, then mid career --Dark Side of the Moon, not only is it psychedelic as hell, it's one of the greatest sellers of all time! Talk about bringing the psychedelic experience to light. No band has done more. The Dead had a counter culture of acid dropping followers but Floyd reached into to far more households with their weirdness. And the albums are just better- Dark Side, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Final Cut and and my personal fave Animals--- all complete masterpieces! They rule the studios!

3) Live-- I don't consider post Waters real Pink Floyd, but as I mentioned I saw the Dead live but unfortunately I never saw Floyd. I did see Waters solo and for my money it was better than the Dead. The Dead are great when they're playing those great melodies but there's just too much fluff live. They're not really improv geniuses, they're not great jazz musicians but they do all this stuff off the cuff. Frankly, it gets a little boring. That being said, I have both Dead and Floyd booters I think that if you take the visual elements out of a Floyd concert a lot is missing. I do prefer a Dead bootleg to a Floyd bootleg. I imagine that to get the full effect of Floyd concert you need the visuals and stage show they brought with them. The Dead just got up and played so it translates better to a bootleg. Still though, gotta go with Floyd for the live experience based on what I know.

If you're looking for one Dead mp3 to add to your collection, someone said I think, go for the live version of Dark Star-- that is one example where the Dead really REALLY shine

both great bands, no dis on either at all

my choice: FLOYD

Both of these bands released their debut record in 1967, BTW.

SunRa: I disagree with you about Pink Floyd doing more for the psychedelic movement. Pink Floyd may have put psychedelia in a few more homes possibly, but the tours of The Grateful Dead were responsible for most of the LSD distribution in America. The Dead were the fuel that the bus drove on.

Fair enough. Good point, my friend.

Hey look its Chinacat.

Both bands were very psychedelic in their own way I think. I like them both as they have been influential in my life.

I voted GD - just sad to see it lagging so much

Funny really as there are definite cut off points for both bands for me (I repeat FOR ME).

I don't really like the Dead post Terrapin Station (and I'm not just talking studio) and Floyd only kicks in with Meddle, petering out around Animals (although certain parts of The Wall are awesome).

Maybe we should have some more esoteric choices for polls - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band vs Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention for example.

Floyd takes me on a journey to a far away, alien landscape

The Dead keep me here on Earth, grounded and all good

I like them both depending on mood, but if I could only have one of any of the two's albums, it would be Animals by Floyd.
