Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin/Grateful Dead

Am I the only member at the Shroomery who doesn't like their music?
Sure, I appreciate their contribution to the "psychedelic movement," if you want to call it that. But I just don't like their music. I like a few songs, but can't stand most of them.
Am I the only one here who feels this way?

I like GD 72 I think I have every show from that year. I like PF animals, wish you were here, Dark side, as for live pf I see no jamming, sounds like they are playing the album. LZ as jimi said they just ripped off all of us (clapton, beck, beatles, ect.) but they went on to be one of the most famous bands in rock.I don't like page's guitar work.

It's an acquired taste...
You really have to feel the music to be able to best enjoy it. Led Zeppelin has such a raw sound to it. The bass is insane and if you've ever seen any videos (ex: The Song Remains the Same) you can see how much Robert Plant puts into his music. It's like he's in a trance the entire time!
Pink Floyd is on their own level. They produced some of the sickest music I've ever heard. They can make you feel high if you're listening to them sober, and if you listen to them high you end up flying. They really know how to carry you through a trip or even just some light meditation.

Couldn't agree with ya less. Always have had a place in my heart for all three of those bands. Dread Zeppelin, however, sounds terrible. So, if you don't like them, we can commiserate.

Heh, I suppose not. I learned to enjoy a lot of other stuff as I got older, but when I was a kid, thats what it was all about, Just bluesy rock 'n' roll. Now-a-days I have pretty diverse taste, but there's always just something about those old bands that brings me back to em.

I like some of the GD's tunes, but I don't think they're the sum-all and be-all of rock. I also like Floyd and Zeppelin even though I can't figure out what the hell Robert Plant is singing half the time.

Fun fact: "Bron-Yr-Aur" is pronounced "Brawn Rawr", and is the name of a place in Wales where Page and Plant laid-low after a huge tour of Led Zeppelin II.

I listen to all kinds of shit. Can get down on some Floyd and Dead and Zeppelin just as easy as I can on some Kruder and Dorfmeister and DJ Kicks or Opeth and Slayer or Muddy Waters or Andres Segovia or Mahavishnu Orchestra.. if it's got musical talent and it keeps me interested I'll listen to it.
They were pioneers... all three of those bands. They paved the way for a lot of what we have today. I have nothing but respect for them as musicians. Though I have all the albums, I rarely listen to them. Dead maybe more than the others.. but it's more of a once in a while kind of thing for me. When I'm feeling nostalgic, or when someone else plays them. Though I have over 90gigs of music on my computer and over 400 CDs so there's a lot to choose from.. can't listen to the dead all day....

Dead studio albums aren't nearly as good as live shows, and to be honest to get a real feel for the music you gotta listen to a show straight through, and loud and pay attention. Its not background music.

why is it that every few weeks, someone feels compelled to make a thread telling everyone they dont like the dead. or they dont like this band or that band. did you ever think maybe no one gives a fuck?? i mean im sure you can tell by all the avatars and sigs, plenty of people dig one, two or all 3 bands. so why would you think anyone gives a flying fuck what you dont like??

it's like the flying circus sketch with the man who contradicts everybody
Quote:
Host (John Cleese): With me now is Norman St. John Polevaulter, who for the last few years has been contradicting people. St. John Polevaulter, why do you contradict people?
Polevaulter (Graham Chapman): I don't!
Host: But you... you told me that you did.
Polevaulter: I most certainly did not!
Host: Oh. I see. I'll start again.
Polevaulter: No you won't!
Host: Ssh! I understand you don't contradict people.
Polevaulter: Yes I do!
Host: And when didn't you start contradicting them?
Polevaulter: I did! In 1952!
Host: 1952.
Polevaulter: 1947!
Host: 23 years ago.

Floyd is my all time favorite band
I like Zeppelin a lot but its a mood thing
Dead are cool but they are even more of a mood thing then Zeppelin.
Before you decide you do not like Floyd though you should really listen to some more of their stuff their sound changed dramatically over the almost 20 yes 20 studio albums they released. Some of their stuff is very bluesy and some is very psychedelic some is just beatlesque brit rock and some is spoken word poetry (final Cut album is awesome IMO).Just do not listen to wall dark side wish you were here, have played some of their older stuff and some of their rarer albums like final cut for people who were pretty knowledgeable bout music and they had no idea it was Floyd, and 2 of them considered themselves Floyd "heads".Everyone has their own taste though but Floyd spans so much of the palette it hard not to like a lot of their stuff

i dont think that pink folyd and Led zepplin should ever be compared to the grateful dead. both pink floyd and led zepplin are way over-rated, and as for the grateful dead, they are far better than either of the others.

Newbie I know your a big Zep fan. You really ought to check out some bootlegs of them. The MSG 1973 shows are legendary of course.. but you haven't heard anything till you've seen/heard the 1975 Earls Court shows. That's Zeppelin at their pinnacle imo. They did like 6 shows for Earls court. I can PM you some links later if you want, but I gotta get going

Well for one,
Led Zeppelin isn't psychedelic (except for some versions of some songs, but I don't think anyone would call them a psychedelic band, and they don't really pair up with Pink Floyd that well, but I love them almost as much as Led Zeppelin )
you can't NOT like Led Zeppelin, that's just "Being a human being" rule #1.
You don't like Rock and Roll, Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song??? And that's just some of their radio hits... Led Zeppelin is the greatest band of all time. It's a fact.
Anyway,
Pink Floyd takes a bit of getting used to, they're my 2nd or 3rd favorite band, Dark Side of the Moon is my favorite album of all time. I can understand why some might not like them.
I only like 5-6 songs from the Grateful Dead though, I think they shined WAYYY more in their live shows then in the studio recordings, kind of like Led Zeppelin, except Led Zeppelin's studio recordings were amazing in their own write.
All I really listen too is blues hard rock, Cream, Hendrix, Zep, Pink Floyd, plus a ton of other bands from around that same time period. As Bob Seger said, I like that old time rock n roll.
Sure there's some talented musicians around today, but they're nowhere near as good as the musicians from the "olden days". Today musicians stick to a formula, a formula that works and sells, but doesn't advance anything, or take any imagination. I could go on forever about this, but I'll leave it at that. I just don't think music of the last ~15 years has been up to par, or anywhere near it. /rant
gahh, didn't notice this was 2 years old.

Zepplin is one of the most annoying bands in the world. I can't fucking stand them, I'd love to destroy my dads cassette, Atrac, vinyl and cd collection of every single fucking zepplin album but I'm not an asshole like that
I hate the grateful dead, bunch of hippies.
Pink Floyd though, they kick ass! Best band in the world.

Love those bands!
But I don't like the Beatles so I can relate.
