Pre-made kits
    #3845611 - 02/28/05 08:39 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there,

i'm gonna be growing a pre-made B+ kit (which i bought from redeyefrog.co.uk) using a plant propagator filled with water and an aquarium heater (method 2 shown on this page: http://monkeymagic.info/). Could anyone tell me, would it be wise of me to clean the (brand new) plant propgator and spray bottle with bleachy water before i start growing them, or is this a bad idea?

Also, on method 3 shown on the page above it mentions:
"1. Buy a small heated plant propagator from the garden centre. Pour a few cm's of water into the base (add a few drops of bleach if you've got any handy). Plug it in so it warms up."
Is adding bleach to the actual water used to keep the shrooms in a humid environment safe? Surely keeping shrooms humid with bleachy vapour cant be good for you when you eat them?
Im a bit confused, if anyone could clear this up for me that would be nice.

Thanks

This is what I do:
Wash the propogator and all the other gubbins (water spray bottle, weight for holding the kit underwater, etc) in water containing baby sterilising tablets. Then I airdry everything on a surface wiped thoroughly with baby sterilising sloution. Then I soak the kit in cooled boiled water, having washed the bucket first in said solution. The water I put in the propogator is also boiled and cooled, as is the water in my spray bottle.
Baby sterilising stuff is much gentler than household bleach, and it works for me. I've just started on a new kit... Equadors this time.
Good luck!!!

I'm using a pre-made kit because this is my first time growing and i just want to dip my toe in the water before i go and jump in head first
If i cant get a successful yield from a pre-made kit then what chance do i have of getting it right starting from scratch?!

So can anyone tell me if i should leave a bit of bleach/baby sterilisation type stuff in the water that i actually use to grow the shrooms inside the propagator? Or am i likely to die from bleach poisoning when i eat the shrooms?

Thanks

Use H2O2 instead of bleach.

h2o2 is hydrogen peroxide, you should be able to find it a the chemists shop (pharmacy) and probably at Tesco, where the Thrifty Chav shops
