Hydrogen Peroxide (h2o2) often propagated mistruths
    #1691412 - 07/06/03 11:52 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I've read alot of posts about making a solution that was 1 part hydrogen peroxide (3% store bought) and 10 parts water, saying that this would make a .3% solution (or that it would be 1/10th as strong). This is not correct. To make a 3% solutioninto a .3% solution, you add NINE parts of water. Ten overall parts, with one of those parts being h2o2 (3%) comes to .3%. teh ratio for .3% is 1:9

I just splash a little on everything and rub it down. A few drops go a long ways. I follow it up with alcohol where needed, and all my working surfaces are doused with Lysol.

If you make a bleach solution and mist your cakes with it, you won't have any mycelia living to produce fruits. The h2o2/h2o mixture is not very good at general disinfection, agents like IPA or Lysol are recommended for that. the h2o2/h2o mix is used to mist casings or cakes that have been fully colonized. Hydrogen peroxide mainly kills spores, rather than actual living biological entities, so it works to kill any nasty trich spores that settle on your casing.

That's not true actually. Go check out the advanced cultivation forum and look at Hippe's Bleach TEK. He has used it quite successfully in place of Hydrogen Peroxide.

>To make a 3% solutioninto a .3% solution, you add NINE parts of water.

Do you really think the peroxide solution you buy is exactly 3% ?

And do you really think you can measure EXACTLY 9 parts and 1 part?

Keeping the discussion of H2o2 alive.....

1) It serves beneficial to the clean myco world we strive for if we add it in with our recipes? AKA...
-adding a little h2o2 to my fruit chamber's water / perlite mix to fend off bacteria from gettin in the perlite to much?
-adding a little h2o2 to my dunk water?
-would adding h2o2 to your brf / verm / water mix do any good or no?

I know the first 2 ive done and been told to do, but the third is just a big does it work thing?

peroxide is great in use with mycelium, but it kills spore, not just bad ones, so i wouldnt recomend putting it in cakes unless maybe u r using mycelium water or some such

Mushrooming as with all living things is not a exact science. Just for shits and giggles I tried using the peroxide right out o the bottle for misting and the water in my perlite. I never mixed with water or used any solution just store bought peroxide. NO PROBLEMS. Nice fruits.

Anno - One cup of storebought hydrogenperoxide to nine cups of water would bea 1:9 ratio that was as exacting as you were with the measurements. however, I think that even the 3% storebought h2o2 isn'treally going t odamage the mycelia.

Worm - could you post some more about that? It sounds really interesting. did it provide better contam resistance?

PS. If you plan on mixing up a water / h2o2 solution, don't pre-mix it and leave it sitting out. The o molecule in h2o2 (the extra one that differentiates it from water) seperates when exposed to light, heat oover 80 something Farenheit. Mix it up each misting from the bottle. If wormbaby is correct, as I have no reason to dobt, you could even mist it directly from the original brown bottle it comes in.

I wouldn't mist cakes with straight 3%.
