I know I posted this same topic a few days ago but I didn't get any positive responses(I did however get very helpful reponses from some people which I appreciate). My question is has anybody used or know of someone who has used a Magic Mushroom Kit, like the one at http://www.growsystems.com and http://www.medicalseeds.com. I know I should do it the old fashioned way but I figured for my first time I would use a kit to get the hang of things... The kit says that you can grow 4-6 lbs of mushrooms in 2-5 weeks using Mycelium. Does this sound like a crock of shit or is it feasible? Any suggestions would help.
P.S. I know mycelium is illegal in most US states. But, do they really pay attention to mycelium and how would they know that mycelium is in the box?
Sorry for posting the same thing twice, I'm just hoping to get more feedback this time..

I would be more than happy to do it the old fashioned way, however I don't think I will have any luck finding a pressure cooker to use. I don't have the money to buy one either. Are there ways to grow mushrooms without a pressure cooker or canner? thanks for all your guy's help

Wally World sells small pressure cookers now that cost only $20. They're easy to use and will hold 4 quat size jars I think, so probably 6-8 1/2 pint jars. Don't waste your time with ANY grow systems. They say its easier and all, but what if something goes wrong? Do you think they'll help you out. Most likely not. And if you're dependent on a system, you won't know what to do when something does go wrong. But if you insist on buying any type of kit, pick up a Myco Bag and syringe from Sporeworks. Its cheap as hell, and theres really no maitinence besides keeping it in a warm place.

Do you know how big the yield is from the Myco Bags at Sporeworks.com? I was just looking at them before I read the post.

Mycelium,
I think you're missing the point that everyone is stressing...you cannot cut corners in this hobby without sacrificing quality of mushrooms as well as limiting the amount of overall harvest. If you want to produce larger flushes, follow the PROVEN tek's that produce such results. There's no other way around it.
Best of luck.

Well, I have a pressure cooker but have never used it. What I do is buy a couple of the cheap pre-sterilized rye bags from Bluethumbs, some spores, compost and casing. Inject the spores into the bags in a clean enviroment i.e. bathroom (lots of Lysol, Clorox wipes, alcohol, and cotton balls). Let the bags colonize, then transfer the rye into plastic trays, shoe box size ($1.99 each). Mix with compost, let that colonize. Then I add the casing let that colonize, and put the trays into a birthing chamber (a transparent rubbermaid thing i bought at K-mart for $8.00 or so) with moist perlite in the bottom. I have a aquaruim pump ($12.00) with tubing going through soda bottles with water+h2o2, plus I fan whenever I remember to. I also keep a fork in a jar of alcohol, should I need to deepscratch, which I always do since for some reason it works better that way. The biggest expense was the thermometer/hydrometer which was about $30.00.
Before I found this website, I got a kit from Homestead ($98.00), thinking pretty much the same thing you did. It got contaminated, and it is much less interesting.
All reusable with minimal expense, and much cheaper than any kit you can find. If i went into jars, it would probably be cheaper still, but I'm being lazy.

If you wanna start out slow, you should try getting a couple of myco bags to start off and once you get the hang of things, then you can make your own jars and do your own process.

You can follow a PF tek without a PC, though it is a little unreliable. If you try following the PF tek you will probably ENJOY cultivating the mushrooms and get a greater reward that comes from greater involvement. I started out growing for the mushrooms, but I now find the whole process enjoyable- give it a go.

If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can always do what I did.. buy one off of ebay. I just ordered a cheap ($20 + $10 ship) 4.2 qt Mirro Pressure cooker a few days ago.

Spore Work's myco-bags on average yield 1/2 dry ounce over 2-4 flushes. A few reports of over an ounce have been reported but that is exceptional.
