Rye soak - Add H2O2? And other questions.

Hey, I'm soaking a bunch of rye grain now with some distilled water. I don't plan on simmering the grain, but I read here that soaking for 24 hours should help germinate some of the residual endospores and help maintain a good moisture content for the rye.

Would it be beneficial to add a small amount of H2O2 to the soaking rye to help fight contams? I plan on rinsing the grain really well afterwards and then loading it into jars and PC'ing.

Since I'm not simmering, should I add a little bit of water to the rye when I load it into spawnbags after soaking/draining? I don't want the rye to be too dry, which seems like the major problem when people don't simmer...

no h202 necessary..pc,ing will kill off everything...i soak for 24 hrs then simmer for 20 minutes or so..never have contam issues..dont make it harder than it is..just follow the teks :wink:

When I soak I do add H2O2, you dont have too, but it doesnt hurt, it can only help.

As for your second question, NO, do not add more water, after you drain the rye very well, load your bags, seal, and pc.

Actually soaking often adds more water then simmering, depending on the grain used, and the temp said grain is cooked at, when simmering.
(that is if most people simmer one hour or less)

It takes time, and practice :wink: , to understand what a proper moisture content is, you have to become like those wine aficionados , and critics, and taste your fair share of grains before you get used to how much water you should have in your grains.  :cheers: :cheers: :cheers:

Personally, I soak, I will simmer if I need to do something in a hurry, but in general, I soak.

i feel that rye needs that little extra simmer to get the best water content. WBS is fine on a 'soak only' preparation, but ive had bad results when i didnt simmer rye. rye berries hold a lot of water, you want to get in as much as possible without bursting any grains.

I simmer, not boil, but simmer my rye seeds for 40 minutes covered, they take on water and don't bust, this step has nothing to do with pre sterilizing or killing germinated endospores, it's just getting water into the seed.

I keep hearing and reading about people having scorched rye berry's, and smelly burnt berry's so here:

bring water to full rolling boil, place rye in boiling water, let come back to a boil, when in a full boil, turn down to low, stir, place lid on, check occasionally, remove after 30-40 mins, or if you start to see evidence of bursting hulls. Reducing the heat to low, brings the water to a simmer. You'll notice it looks like it's bubbling, but when you take off the lid, it stops.

oh, and the water you get when doing the pre soak, it's great stuff for any house plants you may have. Just be aware that if any seed is left in the water, your plants will sprout rye grass.

The h2o2 isn't really necessary, if you do decide to use it, use it very sparingly. I would think that since the soak is to encourage germination of endospores, why add h2o2 into the mix, during this peroid, you don't want the h2o2 fighting the endospores ability to germinate either, it's just not necessary.

I've found extended soaks for taking on h2o causes sprouting. And that won't work. Hence simmering, to take on moisture.
