Hiphop/rap
    #3725018 -

Is there a future for rap and freestyle? Or is there a future for break beats and beat box..
The way things are going, the rap game is multiplying, but the shift is going from raw talent, to hacked mainstream 'black culture rap'.
To me- rap is the words or rhymes sung to the DJ's beat, a inspirational topic, something more off the top of the head than rehearsed and prepared.
Rap is very similar to many types of music, except lyrics are what shines in its department... Can good beats cover the bad lyrics, or can good lyrics make up for bad beats? I think they are interdependent, and your style is according to which area you shine in.

That's just the effects of mainstream music: low creativity, formulaic songs that are not well-practiced, with an emphasis on post-production. There is still plenty of fresh hip hop underground and it has a bright future. I don't think that hip hop has to be freestyled to be authentic, but any good emcee should be a good at freestylin fo sho. I don't think many people would argue with the interdependence of beats and rhymes.

Personally, I'm really digging Atmosphere and RJD2/Soul Position at the moment.

Rap is NOT Hip Hop. Rap is a subset of Hip Hop. And Gangster Rap (your so-called "black culture rap") is a subset of Rap... Hip Hop is about art; breaks, beats, word play, and their interactions. Rap is about materialism.

In this Hip Hop MC's opinion.

Rap is just the lyrical aspect of hip hop, or at least thats how Ive come to understand it.

It can be about anything, it just happens to be materialistic in the mainstream

No, no, no.  Rap lyrics are different from Hip Hop lyrics.  I gave an example in the "what qualifies as underground hip hop" thread.  Rappers talk about guns and hoes and shit, Hip Hop MCs rhyme and rhythm about tons of flows and never quit.

While people do say "and how I rap" referring to the way they are saying their lyrics, it is less confusing to say "and how I spit".  Rap as a music form is what I am talking about.  Rap as an action is what you are talking about.  Get it?  'Cause even I'm confused

I'm talking about a noun rap, you're talking about a verb rap.  Try and get a rapper to understand parts of speech .

I don't know if you were agreeing with me or not...  But this is the exact verse that I used to illustrate my point in the other thread.  J5 is Hip Hop, baby.

First of all approach rap and hip hop music. Its always about the beat. I personally dont like the materialistic aspect but its what comes with the package. Its all about good beats that makes it sell. Some is just retardation packed up and sold by their rich producers.

Just go with what you like.

Every morning when I see the sun rise I bow
Then I stand up, Pick the land up
Got the whole globe in my hand what
Am I disrupting your day, shhh
Listen up the universe has got somethin? to say
I translate, while all of my jams wait
All life is clingin? to the wings of mans fate
And you cant clip the cords
So I find time for inner reflection when I'm bored

Mr. Lif

I think we've had "rappers that will spread the truth, expose the government, fuck the system, and rebel against the power!!!" for awhile now. its just not going to go mainstreme, its fringe. Before hiphop it was poetry *SAME THING* - think alan ginsberg. (this makes me realize i need to brush up on my revolutionary poetry - and you should too.)

Ughhhh, Alright school is in session. I don't even think half of you have really even know what hip-hop is about. Hip-Hop is NOT a genre of music. Hip-Hop is A CULTURE. A culture divided into 4 elements. DJs's/Turntablist; Emcee's/Rappers; Graffiti; & B-Boys/Breakers. Class dismissed.

Just because Kenny G blows goats doesn't mean all jazz is bad. Any catagory of music is going to have a range of talents, and, although talented acts can rise to the top, much of what is succesful will be defined in corporate boardrooms. Rap is like Jazz more then anything else, especially considering it's huge improvisational background. Like Jazz, which has artists as bad as Kenny G and as good as Sun Ra or Louis Armstrong, Rap has artists ranging from awful to brilliant. Also, hip hop is very young compared to nearly all other types of music, with electronic music being older then it. Most genres take a while to produce their best talent. There are some very very talented hip hop artists out there, but no one knows them yet.

"What we need is a generation of rappers that will spread the truth, expose the government, fuck the system, and rebel against the power!!!"

Go listen to Eyedea and Abilities. They are like that.

"Move Theres no telling what I'm gonna do
I'm a thousand years of natural selection coming through
You ain't got as much aggression, possessions, weapons
I'll be damned if I get outdone by the next man
If your beliefs are different then mine then we're gonna fight
who needs peace when you could profit from being right
I hold picket signs outside abortion clinic doors
Take what I want with force
And my God could kill yours

Evolve with the species
Evolving so slowly
Genetically infantile
Violent and Holy (?)
We think we're so smart, but there's not much to know
Caveman is still alive behind those robot eyes
Fully controlled by ten thousand year old instincts
Hands on the war button, flinch and your worlds extinct
This is technology from the barbarian
I see the future, the past will be there again

Remember, the atom bomb came from the same place as poetry"

here are some lyrics from deltron 3030

horus: Things You Can Do
Some Can't Be Done (7X)

Things you can do...

(DEL): '3030 way past the millennium, check it out'

(Verse 1)
Yo, Deltron thunderforce,
Ain't no other source of sunlight, two ton mic
Leave you toungue-tied
Runnin' 'em up with technology with no apology
Shoutin' out to my colony with 3rd EYE Physiology
Millennium past apocalypse is all I spit
Make you swallow it,
Your weak style, I'll abolish it
With nuclear rockets they glued to your optics with sci-fi
Unsettlin' man & mettle blends
Underground chillin' with the mole man
And his whole fam
Inhibit bacterial growth, material growth
Impenetrable, incontestable
Indigestible intelligence
NEVER let a computer tell me SHIT
It's rapid innovation, penetrating
Artificial life forms, who bite songs
I'm a ??
Then I flip the bio-techs
Right into the wireless
Your 3rd EYE is hit with psoriasis
The mightiest Deltron Zero trovers and pursed the travesties
Attempts your ear holes
The area of distribution lifts the clueless
My flow is like, liquid oxygen
Rip it off and with specific impulse
increase the thrust
Grease the cuts
Unleash a cluster of thoughts I muster
I talk to toucher
And rush a commercial communications
Convert solar-energy, inter imagery
In the minds eye, blind side the contagious
Where radioactive isotopes to the ??
Atomic mass they small as fragments
I magnetize the avant lies
My radiation shields reflects, projects the septagons
Who take the truth and stretch it long?
While I bless a song

Next level incredible metal melding
Flex ability and my engine is never failing'

(chorus)

(verse 2)
All your rhyme histories combined
Couldn't violate the prime optimus operative
Use my hydrometer to see how warm you are
Watch me form a star
Hydrogen turned to helium when I shine
Riding 'em revealing 'em leading 'em to the vaccume
Interact with tunes in my digital sinital critical pivital with
the mental
shit on you
Spit infinity hitting energies to dope for our planet
Star spanning slamming hymmes with, mechanical limbs
Scanning your limbs with cosmic rays
You'll all get played, your brain's inferior
I hit the lateral and posterior
My science is eerier
Ionic bonding for your moronic pondering, meet the R marines
My micro machines
Might, throw your team into paralysis
They not talented,
Just a malady
Worry 'bout a salary, creative casualty
Couldn't defrag my power density intensity
Nonequivalence, 900 neutrons
Crush you like croutons
You plus ??
Hiero's like??
Inside a silo
Turbulence tinfole, never simple
Defies excepted methods development most unique
Paralyse central nerous when you close to me
Interstellar void fills with color, appears to bubble
And split into four like amoeba
And have it in planets with ??
Coast like silver surfer
Feel the purplus
High velosity verbal atrocities
Fire resistance, better hire assistance
My pistons glisten ultra high performance
Inside your private porters
Where I fry your components

(chorus)
