casing help
    #375622 - 08/21/01 12:00 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I'm really confused about casing. I've read a lot about it but i still need help. When doing the casing, where is contamination a problem? I realize that everything should be sterilized but after that, how long is it vulnerable for? also, what do you think is the best tek to use for mexi-cubs in pf jars? Thanks

Mexicans should do well with a straight verm casing.Mazatapecs do. No contams with straight vermiculite casing use wet verm for bottom layer and the same for a top layer.

Number one reason why casings get contams is because the layer of verm. or whatever on the bottom is too wet, which invites contams. Also, when the casing is in your terrarium, contam's love stale air, so make sure you fan it out a lot. Contams aren't really much of a problem with casings. The casing will fight of contams much better than a jar of brf that hasn't colonized yet. Just be clean, and you shouldn't have many problems...

Now, is it just me.. or was that a totally contradictory statement? Are contams a problem with casings or are they not? Which is it?

Yes, contams ARE a problem with casings. What I am saying is that there is less of chance that a casing will get contam's when compared to a pf jar just starting out. With casing's, the mycelium has already colonized all of the nutrients, but contams can still take over...

okay sounds good.. I cased 6 cakes in a tray this past Saturday between lower layer of verm and top layer of gro-brick coir.. no mycelium on the surface yet.. and drops of condensation on the saran wrap.. but the whole thing's wrapped in foil and laying under my bed where the temp is around 80 degrees.. I guess at this point I just need to be patient.. thanks for clarifying.
