contamination on mass mycelial slurry (MMS)
    #371580 - 08/14/01 02:50 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

i used a tek available on the shroomery for making a mass mycelial slurry from corn-cob bedding from a pet store. ne ways... I used it, have the slurry incubating, anyways... I've been checking on it, and shortly after I started it (maybe after 24-48 hours) it had kind of a funky smell, like... not the fresh corn-ish smell it originally had, now at day 6 I believe I can see some mycelium just under the surface and especially around the edges of the pans the slurry is incubating in... my question is this...

what about this smell? and... there are a few of these cotton-ball looking puffs on the very suface of the slurry, should I be worried?

thx!

describe the funky smell more effectively and you might get better responses.

alright... lemme go take a whiff :)

the best description I could give of it would be... black liquorice {sp?} smells very sweet, but... almost a mild alcohol scent to it. it's just definately not the mushroomy scent, not fresh.

anyways... is this a bunk tek? has anyone known someone who's tried this tek? thx!

peace.

You can get mycelial growth on the surface of a contaminated broth/slurry. The oxygen content of such things [esp test tubes] varies enough as you go deeper that some bacteria will thrive below while the fungus [mostly obligately aerobic] takes over the surface comfortably. I've had liquid inoculations that I just kept the remainder aside. . .after a few days a couple contaminated and got very turbid, but a thick mycelial mat still grew on the surface.
A little like kombucha, actually :)

so should I skim the surface for the mycelium after, or should I toss it? if it would be possible to skim the surface for the mycelium, it would be a wonderful 'profit' of mycelium for the one jar I used to spawn the corn cob.....

I usually eat more than veils ;) so I wanna make sure I don't eat anything nastified :P

thx! peace out!

If the culture underneath is turbid and/or gives a funky smell, there are easily hundreds of billions of bacterial cells per mL of the solution. You're not going to be able to use that skimmed mat for anything except MAYBE transfering to a substrate which will select for the mycelium over the bacteria. A decent option might be to skim the mat, give a little soak in peroxide [maybe soak and rinse in peroxide a couple times, depends on how durable the mat is]. Then give a shot with something like a little bit of good worm castings--castings have been run through the gut of the worm, mixed with a bunch of various bacteria who use up a lot of the nutrients necessary for other bacteria to thrive. Theoretically ;)
It's not fullproof, but it's an option. Castings have done very well using some 'questionable' grain jars...
The other option is to just start over, it doesn't take that long for spores to germinate.

I only eat veils

cool, I'll take a peek around for worm castings, if it's in my budget, it's worth the expirement {sp?} to me.

although, I might start over. I need to find a better way to spawn more colonized substrate from PF jars... and this method doesn't seem fool-proof :P

thx for the info! I appreciate it, peace out!
