Come on. Now that is just wantonly negative.

Are you denying or encouraging the belief that a happy outlook begets happy results?

A happy outlook doesn't necessarily get happy results, but it helps you deal with the results you get.

For example, one man gets cancer, he fights it for years, he becomes sad and depressed, loses his hair, he blows his head off. Another man gets cancer, he fights it for years, he keeps hopes, he loses his hair, he fights it longer, finally he overcomes it (or maybe dies). Having optimism helps many people persevere until the results do become good, rather than just giving up as a pessimistic attitude often encourages.

How is it pessimistic if the guy had a cheery attitude and merely noted that the situation declined? Should we deny current reality?

Pessimism-
1. A tendency to stress the negative or unfavorable or to take the gloomiest possible view: ?We have seen too much defeatism, too much pessimism, too much of a negative approach? (Margo Jones).
2. The doctrine or belief that this is the worst of all possible worlds and that all things ultimately tend toward evil.
3. The doctrine or belief that the evil in the world outweighs the good.

It's not. If he has a cheery attitude, it's not pessimism, and pessimism is not noting the truth of a bad situation. See above definition.

I am encouraging. I know you don't believe it, but having a positive mental attitude is an advantage at the outset of any situation be it good or bad. Nothing mystical about it...it just provides motivation and determination. We should not deny reality , but maintain a positive, determined attitude in spite of however dire our circumstance may be.

Positive outlook is not just a magic that is supose to give you good results, sometimes it does, but in essence it is about chosing to be happy instead of bitter. It's about controling your emotions into your own favour.

"So I cheered up and sho 'nuff - things got worse."

As my mom would say "What's wrong NOW?"

"Your mom sounds like an enlightened master."

I may be a little biased, but mom has a way of cutting to the chase.
