"Stem" Growing from Caps
    #3692747 - 01/28/05 08:57 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

It appears as though a "stem" (or something similar) is growing from the caps of some of my mushrooms. At first the growth appears like a little nipple and then elongates to probably half-an-inch or so. Does anyone know why this happens or how to stop it from happening? It doesn't particularly bother me, it just looks really strange. Below are some pictures, albeit not good ones.

Hey MoneyAddyct,

That's just a common mutation, no rhyme or reason to it.

Enjoy

I've had mushrooms form on top of pins that I leave, die and get covered with mycelium. The little aborts act like substrate. That looks different though...dont know why so pointy...cool though.

What strain is this?  If they always grow like this then they should be renamed to K-9 Penis Envy :drumming: dadunk, ching!

You are getting "Twins" mutation. It is another mushroom growing from the split/bad DNA inside.

Similar to this, except yours is a full 180 degrees, not 320 degrees.

Cambodian huh?  I may be wrong but the cambodians i've seen have had much wider caps in relation to the pics you provided.  Maybe somehow the energy spent on developing the cap was somehow spent on continuing the stem instead?  Don't know, just speculation...

If you did that you really could rename it like I said above, if you could get it to grow like that consistantly

Paul Stamets: "The Mushroom Cultivator"  Page: 152  Figure: 140.

There is a photo of a similar mushroom where there is stem, a closed cap, followed by another stem growing above the cap.

The description is "Fruit body abnormality occasionally seen in Psilocybe cubensis"

There is no mention of this being a pathogen, so eat it with good vibes and have no fear.
