Fat stems, small caps
    #410396 - 10/01/01 06:20 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

I'm on my second batch of shrooms and my first had the same problem, I'm getting mushrooms that are mostly stems with small caps. I've read several growing procedures and don't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm using a large, pastilc storage container connected directly to an ultrasonic humidifier (the first time I had three 2 liter bottles that I used as chambers to reduce the humidity, but I figured this was the problem (lack of humidity), so I got rid of them). I also have a hose leaving the container for air to flow through, so I figure there can't be a Co2 buildup. If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

according to conventional wisdom, small caps may be an indication of co2 buildup-needing more fresh air exchange. also, c.w. says if the ultrasonic isnt creating enuf pos. pressure, it may not be doing enough good (hence the small caps).

I do believe you should leave those coke bottles on there, just make sure the tubing has no low points for water to plug it up, and the last one on the way into the terrarium should have the slightest hint of fog in it, that's how you know you have the right amount of bottles (btw I'm pretty much quoting right from the MMGG). Also, if you have a tube stuck in the drainage hole, I hope it is not protruding into the terrarium, for the hole should be on the bottom so water can drain out...hope this helps...

It could be two things. Small caps occur from CO2 build up, and fat stems (fatasses) are usually from excess moisture. You're using an ultrasonic, so remember that ultrasonics tend to create a ton of moisture in a very short amount of time. I recommend you cut down the amount of time you have your ultrasonic on slightly and see how that works. As far as the CO2 buildup, you can remedy that by fanning each day in addition to the air exchange created by the humidifier, if you're not already doing so.

I believe my two projects were the same strains. Well thanks guys, I'm going to place the bottles back on. You suggest I "air" the mushrooms once a day or more?
