aborts, and small stems and caps
    #1094516 - 11/28/02 08:32 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

hello. I have been growing using the ez-grow mushroom kit. The kit uses rye berries and compost. My problem is now that it is fruiting, the far majority of the mushrooms from the first flush have been aborts. Out of the first flush so far, only an 1/8 of dried mushrooms have been harvested. The mushrooms that do grow tall, have very skinny stems, and small caps. Most pins have reached about a half inch, to an inch, then aborted.

There were a couple mistakes that were made along the way that i beleave have contributed to the poor growth so far. The first problem is that the rye berries bag was not kept at a constant temperture during the colonization process. the temperture ranged from 70 degrees to up to 95 degrees, although it was around 80 most of the time. This caused slow growth, so when the bag was only about 2 thirds of the way colonized after about 20 to 25 day, the colonized parts of the rye was planted into the compost.

The other mistake that was made was after the compost was colonized, after about 12 days, the chamber was moved to some a different location, where the temperature changed from a constant 80 degrees to 70 degrees for about a week. I was told by the company that the kit was purchased from that the kit had to stay at 80 degrees. after the chamber was moved back to the 80 degree place, pins were formed and the kit was improved. but now the problem is the aborts ad size of the mushrooms.

Is there anything that could be done to improve the amount of mushrooms fruiting, and not aborting. any suggestions or advice would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks alot

Are you fanning this?..  If not fan it 3-5 times a day.

the ezgrow says that it is best to keep the lid on as much as possible. it has many holes placed for air flow. are the holes sufficent, or should it be fanned 3 to 5 times a day?

C02 is heavier then air so it sinks to the bottom of your terrarium, holes in the top would do little to nothing, I suggest fanning at least 2-3 times a day, once the mycellium network is that strong, its very unsuceptable to contams, well except the dreaded green mold haha, but just spray the area with lysol a couple mins before you fan and you should be ok....
