what does azure spawn smell like?
    #368972 - 08/08/01 07:03 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Does it smell like mexicana spawn? If not, I may have made a serious miscalculation when spawing 2 bags of wood chips...... Tsk.

I am not familiar with mexicana spawn but azure spawn smells like shroomy wood chips. There is no characteristic smell. It also tends to be very rhizomorphic with a mycelium that often looks like white threads.

In total agreement with sylo. Smells just like all other healthy mycelium. If the wood chips your using are aromatic, then they will lend their own odor too.

It smells very mushroomy, a little like button mushrooms.
The mexicana smells more like tampanensis, more like walnuts.

shit, SHIT, SHIT! I don't know HOW I managed it but it seems like I spawned 2 gallon bags of wood chips with mexicana spawn. Nooooo, it can't be true, please let it not be true:( This is one of my best fuckups yet:D Ho hum, back to the drawing board...

And the mexicana colonizes the woodchips readily? Then try to fruit the chips.

Don't know yet, I got the smell from the grain spawn, not the chips. I'm still not quite convinced that it was mexicana even though it smelled just like it. I suppose I'll find out from whether the chips colonise or not.
Another Q. Is it better to pasteurise or sterilise wood chips prior to spawning? I did the former. Another fuckup? Nevermind if so, I've still got 3 jars of what is definitely azure spawn. I think........:)

I did bot(st.and.pa.) and bot worked with good success.
If you use unsuplemented chips, then pasteurisation is ok, otherwise sterilize.

Hmm, I was playing around with some Puerto Rican spawn today, and it smelled like mexicana to me as well. I think my nose has just gone a bit funny is all:D
