Having Problems Finding Jars

Where do I go to get these damned things!?!?! Where do I get brf???? I have been to Home Depot and to their website- they don't offer canning jars. Where did you guys get yours??! One guy said he got his at Winn Dixie- I called them and they have none. Also, there are no health food stores that actually sell HEALTHFOOD around where I live. They all sell vitamins and no actual health food. If there is anyone in Miami, please help me. I have everything I need EXCEPT for the jars and the brf...

Canning jars can usually be found at most major grocery stores. (Vons, Ralphs, Safeway, etc.) Just ask an employee of the store. BRF is easy to make from Long Grain Brown Rice, which is also found at the supermarket. Just make sure that the bag has nothing in it BUT rice. You don't want preservatives or any of that nasty stuff. Take the rice home and grind it up in a blender or coffee mill to a somewhat flour like consistency. There ya go, homemade BRF. (One note on the homemade stuff... I usually add about one tablespoon of water per 1/2 pint jar because the homemade BRF is slightly more absorbent.)

Maybe where you live they do, but not here. Publix, Winn Dixie, I forget the other ones... but I've been through them alot of times and I've never seen jars being sold anywhere in the stores..

If worse comes to worst, you can get em online here. They're kinda pricey though, plus they don't bubble wrap 'em and four jars were smashed in transit when I bought em (b4 I realized there was a place half a block away that carries them) You can also try well stocked hardware stores or home/kitchen wares type places. Good luck.

yeah, Wal-mart won't have what you're looking for now, because they're already preparing for Christmas and Halloween merchandise. Check the papers for yardsales and such... might find some old canning jars there. As far as the BRF, try looking in the largest grocery store you can find. I was actually surprised to find it in a large Kroger grocery around here.

I know it sounds funny, but I get my jars from a TrueValue Hardware store. If there are any near you, check for them there. Also, your jars don't *have* to be Ball or Kerr, and the lids don't even have to be metal. If it's hard plastic, then they should withstand being in a pressure cooker or boiling water.

Well, the BRF is no problem. Just do what somebody said and make your own out of whole grain brown rice. That's what I used and it turned out fine. The one thing you have to look out for when not using BRF is the grains of rice will absorb more water than the BRF. So what I do is mix the rice, vermiculite, and water up than I cover it up and let it sit for a few hours so the rice has time to absorb the water than I add more water to the mix to get the moisture content just right. Some people will just tell you to add more water right off the bat but this way is probably better because you can be sure you got the moisture just right. As far as finding jars. Look all over the place they're not hard to find. It doesn't matter what brand name they are as long as they're tapered so you can dump out your colonized cake. Hell, you could probably get away with using something like a drinking glass and just use foil as a lid. There's more of a chance for contamination but if your careful you shouldn't have a problem.

the wal-mart stores are getting ready to clearance out canning jars. if i were you, i would go there and buy hella mason jars with plastic lids, if theyre hard plastic. the wont rust and peel from being pressure cooked if theyre plastic. my walmart only has metal dome lids, i cant find plastic anywhere.
