i plan on using quart size wide mouth jars. now when i sterilize i let the cake cool and innoculate. next iput the jars in large rubbermaid. after pinning begins can i just leave cakes in jar and let shrooms grow to maturity. do shrooms need oxygen to grow or could i leave lids screwed on until the begin to pin then simply poke holes in the jar lids for ventilation and mist lids for humidity. will this work. thanks very much for any imput and for your patience.

i think you got it all wrong. when you use quart jars you dont make cakes. find out more info, i dont think you want to grow that way (since its obviouse you dont know much)

High Stoner,
You can grow in the jars if you want. I don't recomend it. The shrooms need air exchange inorder to grow properly. Good air exchange is also crucial to keeping contamination at bay. There just isn't as much surface area in a jar as there is in a casing conatiner or in a cake.The more surface area, the more air exchange.
If you must grow in the jars I would case them and wrap the jars in tin foil to the level of the casing. Otherwise you will have shrooms growing up from the bottom of your jars. They don't all grow past the surface and they are very hard to get out. More often than not they rot.
You will have to take the lids off of the jars as the shrooms will grow out of the top. Not to mention the air exchange won't be enogh.
Truthfully Stoner, I think Ano is pointing you in a much better direction.

Someone should make a rule that the first thing you do when looking for info is to do a search on your name.
