Confiscation of registered firearms has begun
    #358181 - 07/21/01 06:00 AM (23 years, 4 months ago)

http://www.isra.org/nsnews.htm

The Chicago Police Department and the Illinois State Police have teamed up to make good on Mayor Daley's pledge that, if it were up to him, nobody would have a gun. Daley and his elite "CAGE" unit are apparently taking advantage of gun privacy loopholes to pinpoint certain individuals for inclusion in the confiscation program.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk about 2nd Amendment.

Unbelievable. Even people who don't like guns should just stop and think..... "If the govenment takes this amendment away from us, which one will be next"?

It a matter of principle! And yet most people don't want to hear it:(

You yanks crack me up...how long will this "its in the constitution, it must be right" rhetoric go unchallenged? I've never heard anyone explain why its so important they have un-fettered access to an arsenal of weoponry without using the words "constitutional" or "right"...let me guess, you need protection from all the gun-toting maniacs, right?

I think you have missed the point, Pynchon. The constitution provides US citizens with a huge amount of freedom that many, many other countries don't have. The first 10 Amendments are known as the Bill of Rights, among which are some of the Laws which fashion the basis of our liberty (Right to free speech, press, religion, and thought; Right to be protected from unreasonable search and seizure; etc). Yes the second amendment is somewhat outdated, but if it was to be altered or done away with entirely, then whats next? Whether the right to possess firearms is right or wrong, it is still one of our basic rights. If they take it away, then next could be Freedom of speech, etc.
The constitution is not perfect, but the majority of the constitution is designed to keep the US people free. We don't want to see it altered peice by peice, and one day wake up and realize were in a dictatorship (or, laugh, and outdated system like a monarchy *chuckle*)

And to add the obligatory flame to every shroomery post... Your just pissed because we kicked yer ass :)

heh heh...point taken. Still, the advantage of not having a constitution is that you need never worry about it becoming "out-dated"; law is free to evolve organically, keeping pace with the changing will of the people. I certainly don't believe a constitution is a bad idea, but nor do I believe that in a truly free society a document is needed to ensure that freedom.

And yes, the continued existence of the monarchy is absolutely appalling, though I think there is less public support for it here than in England...'tis only a matter of time....

What's your problem with the monarchy? I think they're pretty cool. It's not like they have any power now a days. They're just there for show and because of tradition. Most of their time is occupied opening shopping centres, visiting schools, and looking pretty for tourists.

Take care

Phil

I don't see that as a reason to want rid of them. OK, they are born into their roles, but so are most people to a certain degree.

Take care

My point was that they live very comfortable, tax-free lives for doing absolutely nothing.

The 2nd amendment exists because govt and business work together to pursue sadistic gratification as an end in itself. As such, government (least of all the supreme court) can not be relied on to uphold the US constitution at its face value for every individual. That responsibility falls on We the People; and the 2nd amendment allows us to carry it out. Failure to do so results in the war on drugs.

What?? This sounds like something SmirkBoy would say. The second amendment exists to defend against a tyrranical government, the reason this country was formed. Before RailGun or Innvertigo quips on me for my previous posts, I believe in the right to bear arms, but I also understand that that right is not absolute and we, as a government, have the responsibility to make sure that this right is not abused at the expense of other rights.

well personally i think the ability to have a gun and go out on your own land and blow the hell out of something is and should always be a right (btw my land is in the middle of no where...left of the pine tree). just because other governments of the world were kinda shady and removed the majority of firearms under questionable motives, doesnt mean the US has to cowtow to world/other countries opinions. its like other countries expect us to give them their cake and pay for it too. god forbid the US opinion isnt the same as zambia's or something.

the US is in the same boat as white males right now. cant do anything right and are guilty for everything.

and thats why i need my gun to hunt more cakes

i agree that the constitution is outdated, but i wouldn't trust any politician out there today to rework it. I really don't understand how the right to fight against tyranny has anything to do with everyone having the right to own a gun though. Well, it looks (to me) that america is going to fall behind europe because of a few flaws in the constitution. hell, no one thought communism would fall back in the 60s, and no one thinks america will fall nowadays, maybe i can finally say "i told you so!".. in the next 40-50 years that is.
