Indoor Azur Observations
    #3527688 - 12/21/04 12:34 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I have AFOAF that has done some recent experiments with indoor azur. As others have previously noted the largest problem has been cap formation. Fungus was grown in a 12" plastic pot on mixed hardwood chips. Pining was induced outdoors. Pots left outdoors developed normally. Those inside developed long gnarled stems with underdeveloped caps that faded with age. Fungus also formed on the sides deep inside the pots both indoors and out. These fruits exibited similiar characteristics to those on the surface inside. These fruits recieved no light.

My big question is, is the missing indoor factor a particular wavelenght of light or maybe the lumens/intensity of the light?

They are out in the open and get continous air exchange. In fact they are next to all of my plants, sucking up any CO2. CO2 is not the issue.

some missing micro-organism, i expect.

the indoor ones - presumably they adopted some outdoor microbes when they pinned outside, but maybe they are then 'open' for interaction with another species that does not like to leave its environment?

very interesting discussion, ryan. the member above is referring to one of loki's recent azure grows - he has since moved this indoors successfully (i witnessed pins), though i haven't seen any pics of the final result, as they fruited during his spell in the slammer. hopefully he'll post some pics

I doubt it, as the pins where set outdoors, but fruitbody development is delayed or inappropriate (little to no caps - just as the fruits outdoors that where on the sides of the planter without any light)

Since then fruits have cont to develop indoors. I have increased the light someone and they are looking better. I am concinced its the light.

I have observed azure patches that spanned an open well lit area into a dense dark forest. The forest specimens grew sparsely and spindly compared to the more exposed specimens. Obviously, even the darkest forest gets some light but it can be compared to dim room illumination. I do think that bacteria stimulate the pinning, but normal development seems to depend on getting adequate light.
