pressure cooker problems
    #3524461 - 12/20/04 02:28 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

ive been using a 7-quart or smaller pc for a while with no problems... my gf just bought me a big 22 quart pc and i tried it twice but... the part where you leave it on high until the pressure control starts to jiggle vigorously isnt working and i dont know why? i filled the water up bout 1.5 to 2 inches up the bottom layer of jars. the second time i tried i just put two empty jars in the bottom and got the same result, the steam pops out of the control, but it never gets jiggling good- any thoughts??

if its a weight that controls the pressure and it pushes the steam out at like 2 times a sec thier is enough pressure unles it just lets steam out without it moving then the weight isnt on the male piece right.

thats my 2 cents

>the steam pops out of the control,
Define "control"

>but it never gets jiggling good- any thoughts??
Does the cooker reach the operating temperature?

i leave it on as high as i can and theweight will shoot up occasionally, but it wont jiggle constantly i think maybe the stove isnt strong enough or something i dont know but im mad because its brand new! and my gf bought it for me:)if i turn it down to med high it stops even making noise really

Lets take it from the top ...
Do a dry run , meaning no grains or anything in the pc but water to the fill line .
Turn on stove top to high , watch and wait , when water starts to boil and bubble , put the lid on the pc , leave the weight off , wait until a nice steady stream of steam comes out of the opening , wait 5 mins then put the weight on , it will not rock at all yet .
Leave on high , watch the pressure rise , as it approaches 15psi(weight will start to rock) back off heat one notch , watch wait and see how pressure changes if at all , adjust heat setting on stove to maintain pressure .
Once got that down , shut it off let it cool completly to zero psi , reset and fill and do it again this time with materials to be PCed

If still get no pressure check that you have all seals on properly (should do this first off )

GL hope this helps

ps does this pc have a psi gauge ?

Is this a brand new unit? If it is, you could contact the manufacturer.

The steam that's shooting out is coming from the weight or elswhere?

i tried it with and without substrate, tested with three different water levels and left it on high after venting steam and putting the pressure weight on. it gets louder and occasionally pops up to let some steam out but it never starts jiggling

i gotta figures something out because i already gave away my smaller one to my friends mom! this thing is 22 quarts... i did some jars on high for an hour and i did the drop test so i think they should be alright. maybe the jigger just doesnt move as much as most other pc's.

I had to buy a higher BTU input burner for my 22 qt pressure cooker to get up past 10 psi...I bought my new plug in burner from Johnstone supply and it gets 15-18 psi which works perfect
You might try any appliance supply house also
Google Johnstone supply ...good luck
