my perlite has been doing fine keeping the humidity in my chamber in the mid-80's. all of a sudden now it's lowering fast. i've added water several times and it hasn't seemed to help. can perlite just all of a sudden lose its ability to humidify or what? it's been in there for about 4-5 weeks now. should i just change it, add more, etc? all help is greatly appreciated

holy shit! changed every month? what source is that from... i have used the same perlite for a year or so! i am not doubting you, just need to backup that statement coz perlite does not lose it's ability to humidify, but it may become contaminated if it is dirty of has casing material spilt on it...

Don't trust a cheap hygrometer. And "freshen" your peroxide with a 10% bleach douche in between flushes. No, perlite doesn't go bad.

Maybe you have too much water in the perlite...
I soak and drain enough perlite to cover the bottom of my terrarium an inch deep, and then cover that with an inch of dry perlite to wick the moisture into the air. Make sure that you don't have it waterlogged. I don't think it works so well when it is soaked.

Wrong Wrong Wrong! It's not the perlite. Likely your meter. As far as the perlite, change it every month or LESS! Just adding more peroxide to keep nasties out will not suffice. The water will become stagnant-meaning by the loss of oxygen, it WILL host contaminants easily. I would change it at least once a month, with weekly additions of peroxide solution. Don't waste your efforts by cutting cost-$2.50 for a new bag of perlite. Good luck and good growing! Bullfrog

would you recomend using the perlite method of humidification? does the cooler still need the 'water catcher' (the slanted peice of plexi-glass)? and would putting it outside for a little while everyday hurt anything? (temps around here are usully in the high80-90s) ill be using just regualr old cakes, and this will be the "pf" strian.
You approach the turnstiles and know that when you get there you have to give the man two dollars or he won't let you inside but when you get there everything goes wrong.

Adding peroxide will add oxygen(peroxide spontaneously breaks down to form O2 and H2O) and kill bacteria, but peroxide doesn't kill existing mold mycelium so it needs to be changed frequently. Once a month is good. You don't need to toss your perlite away when your changing it either. Just bake it for an hour at 350F, to kill contams.

yeh that is what i do! bake and re-use... perlite is expensive where i live. i understand it can host contams because of th whole stagnant thing but in my experience it hasn't really affected my terrariums at all... fingers crossed
