Personal Poll:The Great Perlite/Humidifier Debate
    #520492 - 01/14/02 01:32 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

My firend Billy Bob has done a bit of growing in his time. But he won't admit to being an expert by any means. Nevertheless, he has set up terrariums of Perlite and with humidifiers, but he has never decided what he likes the best. SO I'M TAKING A POLL, just to see what all you professionals and newbies think out there. Obviously, the humidifier is far less time consuming, but what are the main advantages to using Perlite, and overall, what is your preference?

Please excuse the mispelling of the word friend. My fingers are dislexic.
See the thing is: Billy Bob put an end to his service several months back, and is now hoping to set hiself back up. The problem is, that Billy Bob ate a little too much of his product and smoked a lot more of his friend's products. Consequently, he's forgotten a few of the things he learned, and he cannot remeber if he preferred Perlite for a specific reason. But also, WE WANT THIS POLL to serve as a HELP to those who are looking to get started. Perhaps this could be a thread that might help them get some answers quickly. I know Billy Bob spent a lot of time doing research. Which, newbies don't expect handouts, research is extremely imporant, but there is nothing more important or helpful than the advice of experienced individuals. We are sure this poll has been conducted before, but users fade in and out like the wind, and so do the archives. Might as well keep the thing alive.

Ill partcipate in the pole. alothough I an bias because I cant find perlite anywhere. foaf has his setup like this.

Get a tub with a lid. Bend plexiglass inside to make a clear dome for water to roll off of. hook your ultrasonic humidifier to 3/4" tubing that goes to a plumbing cut off valve to control how much mist comes out. Pic below
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/dopicture.php

the hardest part is modifing humidity. an ultrasonic blasts mist and its way too humid for a regular size tub. adjust the shut off valve so the perfect amount of mist comes out, and it saves water in the humidifier. One filling can last upto 5 days.

I like saving time, and conserving energy. and if i sprayed daily, i guarantee id mess something up..

my $.o2

Perlite is the easiest way... and in my reigon where the humdity level is way up there I require little to no time maintaining the perlite...

I easily get 100% humdity level.

I say humidifiers. Like noted above, the hardest part about them is modifying them. After that its smooth sailing. They give air exchange and humidity. What else could you ask for? Personaly i prefer cool mist over ultrasonic. Only because you dont need to maintain humidity because they dont over saturate your terrarium with mist. However humidifiers are expensive and perlite is dirt cheap. I suppose its all about personal preference.

this is my 1st time, growing and i was happily in shock when wet perlite alone has kept my terrarium at 95% humidity with out adding any water or misting at all.......so i say perlite.......keep looking, i found my perlite at homedepot....try true value, its ouyt of season so if they dont have n e on the shelf, ask if they have some in the back. good luck :)

The problem Perlite always posed to me was cleanliness. I had always read that it is neccessary to change your perlite, or at least rinse it out to keep contaminates from growing. and well, I did that ever so often, and I used H2O2 in the perlite to cut down, but I never could seem to fight off the cobweb molds in that terrarium. My cool mist himidified terraium seemed to make it out okay though. Of course, a lot of that may have had to do with the fact that i lived in old house at the time. Mold spores everywhere.

the only bad thing about perilite that I find is that you have to manually air it out. But if you have the time, I'd do it. Much cheaper. I don't have a problem with molds. Cheaper. Cheaper.

cool mist is the way to go

my foafoaf has a kazz(sp) cool mist that runs 4 times a day for 30 min each time it keeps hymidity up and air exchanges regular. some of the humidity is coming from the substrate but he has not had problems with it drying out.

it is the set up for a lazy ass like my friend.

peace pj
